Seminar on Health of the Delaware River Basin

 Encompassing more than 13,500 square miles from New York to Delaware, the waters of the Delaware River Basin impact the lives of 15 million people who rely on these waters for drinking and agricultural and industrial use. This watershed directly impacts the health and economics of our region.

Stroud Water Research Center has been studying the Delaware River Basin for 25 years, and the Stroud Center’s research and restoration are instrumental in shaping the future of fresh water throughout the region.

Join Entomologist John Jackson, Ph.D., and Director of Watershed Restoration Matt Ehrhart on Wednesday, October 19 at The Union League of Philadelphia as they discuss the Stroud Center’s work in the Delaware River Basin including our role in the Delaware River Watershed Initiative (DRWI), an unprecedented collaboration of more than 50 nonprofits to protect and restore water quality in the Delaware River Watershed.

Enjoy an evening at the historic Union League of Philadelphia while learning about the work of the Stroud Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for a cocktail reception. The lecture, presented by Axalta Coating Systems, a leading global supplier of liquid and powder coatings, is at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person or $15 per family.

The Great Pumpkin Carve in Chadds Ford will be held Thursday October 20th and Friday October 21st from 5-9 p.m. and on Saturday October 22nd with expanded hours from 3-9 p.m. at the Chadds Ford Historical Society Visitor Center, 1736 Creek Road in Chadds Ford. On Thursday night, visitors can watch the artists in action as they bring the pumpkins to life, illuminated to highlight their amazing features.  There will be hayrides, live music, haunted trail, food and beverages and more!

Behind the Easel: The Unique Voices of 20 Contemporary Representational Painters

“Why do you do what you do?” Attendees will be challenged to reflect on the passions of their heart such that those passions can be increasingly aligned with day-to-day activities to increase personal influence and impact.

Take a unique tour of significant historical sites within Southern Chester County. Start at the site of the former Chandler Mill before hiking the former mill race. We will hike through the Chandler Mill Nature Preserve to learn about area history while exploring home sites and ruins before visiting the Bucktoe Cemetery, final resting place of at least 8 members of the Civil War Colored Troops. Learn about the archaeology being conducted to determine the church site before exploring the lands of the free African American community known as Timbuktu. The hike will provide a sneak peek at the Chandler Mill Nature Preserve and Red Clay Creek Local Historic District! Light refreshments will be provided.

A crisp fall evening offers the perfect time to get out with the family to enjoy music, pageantry, and fun, and Unionville High School has just the opportunity. On Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016 from 6 to 10 p.m., the school will present “March on the Brandywine,” a marching band competition featuring 11 of the area’s best high school marching bands and color guards. The Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art invites area residents 21 and over to throw caution to the wind, glitter in the air, and relive the fabulous disco era. Join Brandywine associate curator Amanda C. Burdan and scholar Betsy Fahlman, Professor of Art History at Arizona State University, for a lively exploration of “rural modernism,” a fascinating new approach to interpreting American art between the world wars that includes artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Grant Wood, N. C. Wyeth, Charles Demuth, Charles Sheeler and Grandma Moses. As the core of American modernism took shape, small towns played a part in creating a style that was reflective of the entire country. Many of these “rural” artists incorporated Pennsylvania places, such as Lancaster, Coatesville, Chadds Ford, and Doylestown into their paintings, taking modern art beyond the big cities. The program will include time to view the exhibition, Rural Modern: American Art Beyond the City and light refreshments. A book signing of the exhibition catalogue will be held directly following the talk.

1 p.m.  “American Crossroads: Rural Life Meets Modern Art” 
The story of how modern art first arrived in the United States takes many forms, but most accounts of the tale take place in New York or other major American cities. This, however, is only the beginning of the story. The full scope of American modernism reflects the undeniable impact that rural America had on the expansion and embrace of modernism in this country. Treatments of coastal New England, small-town Pennsylvania, Midwestern farms, and other rural regions of the country illustrate the translation, spread, and growth of an American version of modernism.

2:30 p.m. “Rural Moderns: Charles Demuth, Charles Sheeler, and Pennsylvania” 
The crisp modernity of Precisionism is often associated with the urban and industrial imagery of the Machine Age. Yet some of the strongest works produced by its leading practitioners – Pennsylvania artists Charles Demuth and Charles Sheeler – were inspired by rural structures and settings in locales where they spent significant amounts of time. From Demuth’s base in Lancaster and Sheeler’s in Doylestown, these artists created iconic images of American modernism and together defined this distinctly American style outside major artistic centers.

Magic, Movies, Music and More! brings favorite spooky movies to life on stage with soundtracks from the films, and there will be magic performed by the maestro. You’ll hear music from the movie Star Trek into Darkness, plus Back to the Future by Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman’s Spiderman, as well as music from The Gladiator by Hans Zimmer, and from the animated film How to Train Your Dragon. Children are encouraged to come in costume, and participate in a Costume Parade which will take them up onto the stage to receive treats from the maestro!
