Join Canine Partners for Life (CPL) for our annual Open House and Cow Bingo on Saturday, September 17 from 1 to 5 p.m. Gather the entire family for an afternoon of free fun to learn how service and companion dogs are trained, and hear firsthand how they impact the lives of individuals with disabilities.
“I look forward to the Open House every year because it gives us the opportunity to share the important work we do with our community and friends,” said Darlene Sullivan, CPL Founder and Executive Director. “It is such a fun and exciting way for new people to learn about CPL’s mission, and, for those already familiar with CPL, to speak with new volunteers and graduates and get to know us better.”
Upon arrival, guests will receive a passport, taking them on a journey to learn about CPL’s mission to raise and train service dogs for individuals with a wide range of disabilities. Visitors can watch service dogs demonstrate a variety of skills including tugging jackets off, retrieving dropped objects, and paying a cashier. CPL staff and volunteers will be giving tours of our state-of-the-art kennel where our dogs are housed for their second year of training.
The most popular stop on the passport is the “Puppy Kissing Booth” where guests can learn about our volunteer puppy raising program, meet our service dogs in training, and steal a few puppy kisses! There are also opportunities to shop from local vendors, listen to live music from Ol’ 422, enjoy a BBQ lunch, play kids’ games, and watch the ever-popular Cow Bingo! Cow Bingo is a game of chance that pits players’ luck against the cow “doo”ing her thing. If the cow heeds the call of nature on one lucky person’s square, they are the winner of $5,000! Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased here. Squares are randomly assigned. Winner does not need to be present to win.

All tours begin at the Brandywine Valley Conference and Tourist Center, 300 Greenwood Rd., Kennett Square, PA 19348. Phone: 484-700-8550. Visitors are encouraged to arrive at 1:45 at the Tourist Center for a 2:00pm departure. The tour will take about 2 hours.
Payment is $20. for adults, $15. for children, to cover the cost the rental of the bus. Payment is due 4-5 days prior to the tour date. A check to the Kennett Underground Railroad Center (KURC) should be mailed to: 296 Kendal Dr., Kennett Square, PA 19348.
Tours will be held rain or shine - the bus is air conditioned and can accommodate up to 23 people. A minimal of 14 people is required. If the tour is cancelled, you will be contacted several days in advance & payment will be refunded. Volunteer guides are very well informed about the Underground Railroad in Kennett Square and environs.
The KURC guided bus tour will cover some of the history of the development of the Underground Railroad (URR), particularily as it relates to Chester County.
The tour will include:
- passing by 5-6 original abolitionist homes, with research-based descriptions of the people living in this important hub of the URR during the 1800's;
- a visit to the first street in Kennett Square and the integrated residents of that time, as well as the descendants of abolitionists that still live in the community;
- a tour of an 1801 Quaker Meetinghouse, with information about the local Quakers of that era and why many were so committed to abolitionism;
- a stop at the new Kennett Underground Railroad Center , located in the original home of abolitionist Eusebius Bernard;
NB: Information about the Underground Railroad from early times have focused largely on the white people who aided fugitives. Now acknowledged is the significant contribution made by African Americans. This tour will include some of that history especially as it relates to Chester County, PA.
Once again, “Love Seed Mama Jump” will take the stage at Anson B. Nixon Park for a fundraiser to benefit the park, a hidden sanctuary of ponds, streams, fields and woodlands, tucked into a corner of downtown Kennett Square. “Love Seed Mama Jump,” a six-piece rock band from Dewey Beach, Del., will be backed up by “Californium,” a Kennett Square-based alternative rock band. The festive, family-friendly, rain-or-shine event will run from 2 to 7 p.m. Kids’ activities will include face-painting moon bounce, sports demonstrations, and more. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn more about Kennett Township’s new Sustainable Development Office, and food and beverages will be available. No outside food or drink or pets will be permitted for the fundraiser. Tickets are $15 for adults; children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available online at www.ansonbnixonpark.org
On Sunday, September 18 at 2 p.m., Dr. Samet will give a gallery talk, and discuss her selection process and unveil the 5 prize winners. That is exciting! First place prize is $1000, second place is $500, third place is $350 and there are two Honorable Mention prizes at $100 each. Those are very large prizes for a Chester County show, which is one of the reasons this show draws in artist entries from all over the country.

The Coatesville Invitational Vintage Automobile Grand Prix – which aims to evoke the spirit of sports car racing prior to 1965 – will debut on Saturday, Sept. 24. It will feature approximately 50 vintage autos and motorcycles dating back from the early 1900s through the 1960s. A race from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. will follow a 2.2-mile course along Lincoln Highway, encompassing the heart of the city and its neighborhoods along America’s first, super highway. These eye-catching, historical vehicles may be previewed along the “Pit Row,” which will encompass the 100 through the 300 blocks of Lincoln Highway from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition, a Vendor Village featuring auto and industrial memorabilia will be set up at Gateway Park, located at First Avenue and Lincoln Highway, and . The village will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and bands, food trucks, and wine-tasting will also be available. Admission is free, and parking in designated areas, including the Coatesville Train Station and Scott Field, will be $5 (credit cards only). Registration is now open for La Comunidad Hispana’s (LCH) first annual 5K and 1-Mile Family Fun Walk in Anson B. Nixon Park on Sunday, September 25, 2016.
Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. The 5K, scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m., is a fast, fun course through and around beautiful Anson B. Nixon Park with chip timing. A 1-mile family fun walk will follow at 9:05 a.m., with fun activity stations along the trail. The event will finish up with a children’s 50-yard dash at 10:00 a.m., closing remarks, and prizes for the runners and the teams with the most team spirit, most amount raised for LCH, and most team members.
Entertainment is being planned throughout the morning with live music and appearances from team members from Philadelphia Union.
All proceeds will go to support La Comunidad Hispana (LCH), a nonprofit bilingual community health center that helps low-income families to stay healthy, build strong families, and lead productive, fulfilling lives. The LCH run (registration and fee required) is a fast course through and around the park with chip timing. The one-mile walk includes fun family activities at stations along the way. There will be food, goody bags, event t-shirts, and family activities, including an appearance by Philadelphia Union team members. At 10am Hadley Presents a FREE concert by El Mariachi Flores as a finale to the event. The band performed for Pope Francis during his recent visit to Philadelphia.
In partnership with the Downingtown-Thorndale Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Borough of Downingtown, Victory Brewing Company presents the Downingtown Fall Fest, an annual street festival which ‘falls’ on the first official weekend of the autumn season. Each year, the free, family-friendly event beckons locals to spend their day enjoying live music, great local food, shopping and Victory beer, including the Oktoberfest amber lager, Festerbier. Downingtown Fall Fest will be held at Green Street and East Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Downingtown. Chester County Women (CCW), a 501c3 organization, invites area women interested in playing a fun 9-hole round of golf to its annual Women Only Golf Outing – WOGO! 2016 – being held at the West Chester Country Club in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on Monday, September 26.
This outing is CCW’s 10th Annual Tournament and is held as a women only event to underscore the importance of enabling women to network on the golf course as well as to raise scholarship money for a key global objective: education.
Cost is $90, which covers a golf clinic, greens fees, golf cart, and 10th hole hors d’oeuvres. A cash bar will be open during the 10th Hole Celebration, the networking/awards portion of the event, from 4:30- 6 pm. Check-in is Monday, September 26, between 1 and 1:45 PM, with a golf clinic offered at 1:15 pm until the shotgun start at 2:00 PM. Or you can practice putting and chipping until the shotgun start. The West Chester Golf & Country is a multiple tee, nine (9) hole golf course that plays to an 18 hole par 70. It measures 5700 yards with a slope rating of 126. With tight fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and small greens, the course offers a challenge to player of all skill levels. The course features Bent grass fairways and greens. West Chester Golf & Country Club enjoys a rich history dating back to its founding in 1897, making this one of the most historic and well respected clubs in the region.
