9/11 Remembrance at Washington Memorial Chapel
Sep 11 @ 16:00 – 17:00

A Solemn Evensong Service Will Be Held Followed By A Community Event

Nearly three thousand lives were lost on that beautiful, sunny day 15 years ago. A day that will forever be etched in every American’s mind – no matter how young or old.

Determined to honor those who were taken from this Earth too soon, the Washington Memorial Chapel is hosting a Solemn Evensong Service on Sunday, September 11 at 4 PM. During the special service, the newly elected Bishop Daniel Gutierrez will lead the service with preaching by former Bishop Frederick Borsch. Members of the National Park Service and Irish Thunder Pipes and Drum Band will be attending.

The Evensong will conclude with a Thanksgiving for the National Park Service and a prayer at the grave of Louis J. Nacke II, one of the Heroes of Flight 93. The Chapel invites community members to come pray for those that lost their lives on that tragic day and welcomes anyone from any faith.

To learn more about the Washington Memorial Chapel, visit visit http://wmchapel.org/heritage/ and http://www.savewashingtonmemorial.org/ to learn about the restoration campaign.

About The Washington Memorial Chapel

The Washington Memorial Chapel was built as a tribute to General George Washington and the Continental soldiers who survived the brutal winter cantonment at Valley Forge in 1778-1779. The inspiration for the Chapel resulted from a sermon preached by the founder and first rector, the Rev. Dr. W. Herbert Burk, of Norristown, Pennsylvania. In June 1903 the cornerstone was laid on private property donated by the I. Heston Todd family. A small framed building preceded the present structure which became known as the Theodore Roosevelt Chapel, in honor of President Roosevelt, who visited the site in 1904. The Chapel was completed in 1917.  It is the home of an active parish in the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania.

Designed by Milton B. Medary, Jr., the Chapel was erected for two purposes. It is the home of an active parish as well as a national memorial to Washington and the Continental Army, welcoming visitors from all over the world and serving as a “wayside chapel” for those who visit Valley Forge National Historical Park.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Both the Chapel and the Washington Memorial Heritage are private organizations. Visitors are often surprised to learn that the Chapel receives no funding from the National Park Service and is not formally affiliated with the Valley Forge National Historical Park.

Washington Memorial Heritage was created as a secular nonprofit, independent of the Chapel. It is a qualifying charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the federal tax code. This allows foundations and individuals who might not contribute to a purely religious organization to aid in the preservation of this magnificent building, which has been described as one of the foremost examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the United States.

Learn how Service Dogs Change Lives at CPL’s Open House and Cow Bingo

Canine Partners for Life’s largest and longest running event

Join Canine Partners for Life (CPL) for our annual Open House and Cow Bingo on Saturday, September 17 from 1 to 5 p.m. Gather the entire family for an afternoon of free fun to learn how service and companion dogs are trained, and hear firsthand how they impact the lives of individuals with disabilities.

“I look forward to the Open House every year because it gives us the opportunity to share the important work we do with our community and friends,” said Darlene Sullivan, CPL Founder and Executive Director. “It is such a fun and exciting way for new people to learn about CPL’s mission, and, for those already familiar with CPL, to speak with new volunteers and graduates and get to know us better.”

Upon arrival, guests will receive a passport, taking them on a journey to learn about CPL’s mission to raise and train service dogs for individuals with a wide range of disabilities. Visitors can watch service dogs demonstrate a variety of skills including tugging jackets off, retrieving dropped objects, and paying a cashier. CPL staff and volunteers will be giving tours of our state-of-the-art kennel where our dogs are housed for their second year of training.

The most popular stop on the passport is the “Puppy Kissing Booth” where guests can learn about our volunteer puppy raising program, meet our service dogs in training, and steal a few puppy kisses! There are also opportunities to shop from local vendors, listen to live music from Ol’ 422, enjoy a BBQ lunch, play kids’ games, and watch the ever-popular Cow Bingo! Cow Bingo is a game of chance that pits players’ luck against the cow “doo”ing her thing. If the cow heeds the call of nature on one lucky person’s square, they are the winner of $5,000! Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased here. Squares are randomly assigned. Winner does not need to be present to win.

CPL is located at 334 Faggs Manor Road, Cochranville, PA 19330. This event is rain or shine. Personal pets are not allowed at the event. To learn more, visit CPL’s website or Facebook page. All event proceeds benefit CPL’s mission.
