Evening at Kuerners

June 21, 4:30-8:30 p.m. 

Enjoy evening access to Kuerner Farm where Andrew Wyeth found subjects for hundreds of tempera paintings, watercolors, and drawings. Artists are invited to explore the property where they can sketch, paint or photograph and gain insight into Wyeth's process on an optional tour.

Nature Prints

June 22, 6-8 p.m.

Come to the Brandywine River Museum of Art to unwind, mingle and make art! Participants will follow simple instructions to carve a linoleum block and create a nature-themed canvas tote. No experience necessary. Price includes materials and light refreshments. BYOB!

The Hadley Fund is pleased to sponsor Progressive Appalachian Music with Ken and Brad Kolodner, joined by Alex Lacquement in the first of this summer’s free concert series presented by Historic Kennett Square in Anson B. Nixon Park.

This dynamic father and son duo pushes the boundaries of the Appalachian tradition by infusing their own brand of driving, innovative, tasteful and unique interpretations of traditional and original fiddle tunes and songs. Joining them for this appearance is Alex Lacquement. From Bluegrass Unlimited – April 2014: “The Kolodners and their collaborators play with impeccable chops and with great feeling.” This concert, on Wednesday, June 22^nd at 7pm will have you kicking off your shoes and dancing in the park.

All tours begin at the Brandywine Valley Conference and Tourist Center, 300 Greenwood Rd., Kennett Square, PA 19348. Phone: 484-700-8550. Visitors are encouraged to arrive at 1:45 at the Tourist Center for a 2:00pm departure. The tour will take about 2 hours.

Payment is $20. for adults, $15. for children, to cover the cost the rental of the bus. Payment is due 4-5 days prior to the tour date. A check to the Kennett Underground Railroad Center (KURC) should be mailed to: 296 Kendal Dr., Kennett Square, PA 19348.

Tours will be held rain or shine - the bus is air conditioned and can accommodate up to 23 people. A minimal of 14 people is required. If the tour is cancelled, you will be contacted several days in advance & payment will be refunded. Volunteer guides are very well informed about the Underground Railroad in Kennett Square and environs.

The KURC guided bus tour will cover some of the history of the development of the Underground Railroad (URR), particularily as it relates to Chester County.

The tour will include:
- passing by 5-6 original abolitionist homes, with research-based descriptions of the people living in this important hub of the URR during the 1800's;

- a visit to the first street in Kennett Square and the integrated residents of that time, as well as the descendants of abolitionists that still live in the community;

- a tour of an 1801 Quaker Meetinghouse, with information about the local Quakers of that era and why many were so committed to abolitionism;

- a stop at the new Kennett Underground Railroad Center , located in the original home of abolitionist Eusebius Bernard;

NB: Information about the Underground Railroad from early times have focused largely on the white people who aided fugitives. Now acknowledged is the significant contribution made by African Americans. This tour will include some of that history especially as it relates to Chester County, PA.

Come out for an evening of mighty Irish music, when the Green Willow Folk Club presents Méara Meara!

Doors open at 7 pm at the Blue Ball Barn 1914 West Park Drive, Wilmington, DE. This is a relaxed, intimate venue in Alapocas Run State Park, just off of Route 202.

Méara Meara (“MARE-uh MAR-uh”) is Irish for lively fingers and this trio has them!  They are Haley Richardson (fiddle & vocals), Keegan Loesel from Chadds Ford (uilleann pipes, whistles, & vocals), & Dylan Richardson (guitar & bouzouki).  Haley recently received the Junior Fiddler of Dooney title, and has won seven Mid-Atlantic Fleadh awards & two All-Ireland titles.  Keegan has won twelve Mid-Atlantic Fleadh titles, & is also an All-Ireland medalist.  They are joined by Dylan Richardson, who (though not keen on competing) has also qualified for the All-Ireland competition.

Méara Meara have appeared onstage with such Irish music luminaries as The Chieftains, John Whelan, Paddy Keenan, The Teetotallers, & Altan, and have performed from Vermont to Boston, from Long Island to the south Jersey shore.  Tim Edey (of The Chieftains) says:  “Haley, Keegan, and Dylan are absolutely astounding musicians and singers with skills that belie their years ... Watch out scene.”

In the days preceeding this show, Keegan & Haley will compete at the Mid-Atlantic Fleadh in Parsippany, NJ, in solo events and as a duet, where they hope to qualify for the All-Ireland Fleadh to be held in August in County Clare. This concert kicks off a brief fundraising effort to help offset their travel costs. Stay tuned!

Please join us this Sunday, July 10, for our annual fireworks celebration. This year’s fireworks will be held at Exton Park, which is a new location. The festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a DJ, followed by the legendary Greaseband at 6:30 and fireworks after dusk. Enjoy a variety of food for sale, including pulled pork, chicken, burgers, hot dogs, sausage, onion and peppers, side dishes, soft pretzels, Rita’s water ice and fresh squeezed lemonade. Carpooling to the event is encouraged. Parking will be available at Valley Creek Corporate Center and Church Farm School, via Swedesford Road and Route 30. Handicapped parking will also be offered.

“LiberTEA! EqualiTEA!” will treat participants to insight into the role tea played leading up to the Revolutionary War, educate them about how women used tea parties as a form of protest, enable them to create “Stamp Act” taxes and help debunk some 18^th-century tea myths. In the process, guests will taste some Colonial era “anti-tea” drinks and rub elbows with General George Washington (portrayed by Carl Closs), Alexander Hamilton (portrayed by Gene Pisasale) and African American Revolutionary War soldier Ned Hector (portrayed by Noah Lewis).
