Learn the secrets to capturing botanical photographs at the Chadds Ford Historical Society.

To get us in the mood for spring, botanical photographer David Ward will be presenting on "The Aesthetics of Botanical Photography." A teacher of botanical photography at Longwood Gardens, Ward will share some of his tips of how he has captured flowers and other botanical subjects. His lecture with deal with fundamental issues of aesthetics, such as the nature of beauty, the relationship between form and content, problems of evaluation of art, and issues of abstraction in art.

Admission is $10 for non-members and free for members.

Interested in another lecture in the series? Our final one will be on March 22 and will feature local historian and author Gene Pisasale as Colonel Alexander Hamilton. His lecture titled "Alexander Hamilton: Architect of the American Financial System" will shed light on one of the most important, yet least understood of the Founding Fathers. Alexander Hamilton memorabilia from Pisasale’s personal collection will be on view. Don’t expect Gene Pisasale to rap or dance, but he will entertain and enlighten as he appears in full Continental Army officer's uniform to share the story of Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804).

Design a basic plan for a garden that requires less maintenance, fewer inputs, and is adapted to your local conditions. Learn how to measure, inventory, and analyze your site, then make a conceptual design and planting plan. Broaden your design perspective, increase biodiversity in your landscape with native plants, decrease space dedicated to lawn, and create plans for ecologically sound habitats that benefit insects, birds, and other fauna. Be prepared to walk outdoors.

Jules Bruck is an Associate Professor of Landscape Design at the University of Delaware and owner of Evolution Landscape Design, LLC. Her current research focuses on design-based learning and public perception of sustainable landscape practices.
