Chef Anthony’s Italian Market is very proud to support Mommy Sue’s Children, a grass roots effort to educate and empower underprivileged children in Haiti. Chef Anthony’s is active in supporting many local charities but we also feel a moral obligation to help those in need without regard to where they live. As a member of the Concordville-Chadds Ford Rotary, it was distinct privilege to meet Sue Mardinly, the founder of Mommy Sue’s Children.

The catastrophic earthquake of 2010 is only the latest--and worst--natural disaster to devastate the nation of Haiti. Up until the quake, the hurricane season of 2008 was the cruelest natural disaster ever experienced in Haiti. Four storms--Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike--dumped heavy rains on the impoverished nation.

Even though five years have passed since the earthquake in 2010, the impoverished children of Haiti continue to suffer. Education in Haiti is only accessible to the wealthy few and Mommy Sue has set out to help as many children as she can with support from local Rotary Clubs, Rotary International and from anyone who cares about education.

My wife Amy (Chair of the Biology Department at Swarthmore College) and I, along with our entire team at Chef Anthony’s Italian Market are committed to doing all that we can to help these wonderful deserving children.

In many places in the US there are poor schools, but in Haiti there are no schools for the majority of the poor children and where there are schools, they are, in most cases, housed in primitive structures without clean water, food or teachers for that matter.

We at Chef Anthony’s are confident that with the help of Rotary, our customers, and our vendors, that we can bring hope to Mommy Sue’s Children. Children hold the key to the future and as the world gets smaller, it’s our duty as citizen of the world to help all those in need.

$100 pays a teaches salary for a month

$250 pays for yearly tuitions including, 2 uniforms, supplies and one daily protein for a child

Our opening concert celebrates our 75th anniversary with a commission by the acclaimed young composer, Anthony Constantino whose music has been described as, “Plush, cinematic and animated” by Anthony Tommasini, chief music critic for The New York Times. Timotheos Petrin, winner of the Techni Cello Competition, will perform the Saint Saëns Cello Concerto. The program includes Puccini’s beautiful and melancholy elegy for strings and builds to a boisterous finale with Respighi's epic tone poem, The Pines of Rome.

Local cheese and chocolates are the highlights for this October's "Art of Food." October 18th, Galer Estate Winery in Kennett Square will host the Chester County Artisans, which include: The Farm at Doe Run, Amazing Acres, Birchin Hills Farm, Meadowseat Farm, Yellow Spring Farm, Conebella Farms, and Shellbark Hollow Farms. Most of these cheese makers only sell to wholesale customers, which makes their gathering at Galer Estate Winery on October 18th all the more exciting for the local consumer. Locally made chocolates are also a huge favorite in our area. Eclat Chocolates will be paired with Galer Estate wine on the 18th.

Flickerwood Winery's tasting rooms in Oxford and Kennett Square, they will be introducing a new line of chocolates from Dipped Delights.   Dipped Delights is a small chocolate company located in Oxford, Pa and they provide Flickerwood with a wide variety of chocolate covered items from strawberries to rice krispy treats to pineapple to cashew clusters.  Flickerwood will also be highlighting their partnership with DiBruno Bros cheese products, and even have a specially created ice cream flavor called "Raspberry Wine Ice cream" made by La Michocana of Kennett Square. A local jam company, Wicked Concoctions, has also made three jams with Flickerwood wines that will all be highlighted in the month of October in their tasting rooms.

Longwood Fire Company will hold its annual open house on Sunday, Oct. 18, from noon until 3 p.m., a free, public event that will include food, family fun, and life-saving demonstrations. Refreshments provided by Herr’s Food and Wawa will be served.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County is sponsoring a rally on Sunday, Oct. 18, at Kerr Park in Downingtown and is inviting the public to "stand up, speak up, and take action" to prevent this escalating social problem. Speakers will include Sen. Andy Dinniman, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan, Downingtown Mayor Josh Maxwell, and Domestic Violence Center of Chester County CEO Dolly Wideman-Scott.

Fall is a great time for planting a moss garden. Learn proper transplanting techniques and cultural practices such as watering, grooming, and removing leaves and other debris. Work with several commonly used mosses and gain hands-on experience in the garden with Mt. Cuba Center’s professionally trained horticulturists. Dress for the weather and working outdoors. The session will be run by Betsy Gage, the horticulturist at Hartefeld National Golf course where she is transforming the traditional landscape into a native plant based one, and Marcie Weigelt,  the pond area horticulturist at Mt. Cuba, where she develops, maintains, and showcases pond landscapes.

3^rd Annual Care 2 Cure Walk/Run

to Benefit Crozer Regional Cancer Center Is Added To Oct. 24

Schedule to Celebrate 10^th Anniversary of Crozer Brinton Lake

The Crozer Cancer Project Team will host the 3^rd Annual Care 2 Cure Walk/Run in Glen Mills on Oct. 24. The race will start at 8 a.m. at the Crozer-Keystone Cancer Center (500 Evergreen Drive, Glen Mills) with the runners and walkers able to enjoy either a 5K run or one mile walk on a certified course that winds through the Shoppes at Brinton Lake. On-site registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 24.

Proceeds from the race will benefit the Crozer Cancer Project Team, which is committed to ensuring that the Crozer Regional Cancer Center remains a comprehensive, leading edge provider of accessible, compassionate and state-of-the-art cancer care for patients in our region.
