Kennett Square’s Art Stroll is a monthly celebration of the local art scene as it is showcased in the galleries, shops and restaurants throughout town. As a painter, Louis C. Tiffany was captivated by the interplay of light and color, and this fascination found its most spectacular expression in his glass “paintings.” Through the medium of opalescent glass, Tiffany could actually capture light in color and manipulate it to achieve impressionistic effects. Using new and innovative techniques and materials, Tiffany Studios created leaded-glass windows and lampshades in vibrant colors and richly varied patterns, textures, and opacities.
Organized by The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass in New York City, Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light is comprised of five windows, twenty lamps, and seventy-five pieces of opalescent flat glass, in addition to educational models illustrating how leaded-glass shades are selected and fabricated, along with three examples of Tiffany lamp forgeries to explore issues of authenticity and connoisseurship.

The objects on display are some of the most iconic and celebrated of Tiffany’s works. Chosen for their masterful rendering of nature in flowers or landscape scenes and for the subtle use of light and shading in decorative geometric patterns, they exemplify the rich and varied glass palette, sensitive color selection, and intricacy of design that was characteristic of Tiffany’s leaded-glass objects. This exhibition also highlights some of the key figures at the Tiffany Studios who made essential contributions to the artistry of the windows and lamps—chemist Arthur J. Nash and leading designers Agnes Northrop and Clara Driscoll.
Dr. Egon Neustadt, the founder of The Neustadt Collection, began acquiring Tiffany lamps in 1935. He went on to amass an almost encyclopedic collection, but perhaps his most significant acquisition came in 1967 when he purchased the flat and pressed glass leftover from the closing of the Tiffany Studios in the late 1930s. This collection contains some 275,000 pieces of glass and is the only holding of its kind. With both materials and objects, The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass is uniquely positioned to fully explore Louis C. Tiffany’s legacy of painting with color and light.

Longwood Gardens’ New Summer Exhibit,
Longwood Gardens’ new nighttime installation, Nightscape: A Light and Sound Experience by Klip Collective, opening today, takes guests on an immersive journey around the Gardens with moving imagery, light and original music using Longwood’s plants and landscape as the canvas. Created by Klip Collective of Philadelphia, this innovative display is Klip’s first garden-wide installation and will showcase never-before-seen views of Longwood at night. Tickets are on sale now at longwoodgardens.org.
“Using our Gardens as the inspiration and the canvas, Klip Collective is creating an imaginative visual and sound experience. Our guests will journey through the landscape and encounter the beauty of the gardens in a new and memorable way, augmented by light, imagery, and sound,” said Executive Director Paul B. Redman.
“Nightscape is an experience very much in relationship with what’s already here at Longwood,“ said Klip Collective Director Ricardo Rivera. “Within each different Garden landscape, we’re interpreting the space through movement, color, light, and sound, feeding off what’s there and illuminating it with our imaginations in a playful way,” he said.
One of the Nightscape experiences guests will encounter is at the Rose Arbor. Here, horticulture and art converge in an arrangement featuring striking bismarckia palms illuminated in a kaleidoscope of color.
The Flower Garden Drive by day is a formal avenue of towering hedgerows, but during Nightscape, undulating waves of blue and green transform flowerbeds, hedges, and trees into an undersea fantasia.
The Legacy Tree, one of the oldest in the Gardens, is transformed as deep blue and violet colors move from the tree’s root system through its arching canopy where particles of light disperse into the night sky.
The Large Lake inspires a celebration of the natural world, orchestrated against a musical score that evokes the sounds of the night forest. The Flower Garden Walk is home to thousands of points of light that play and scatter among the flowerbeds, delighting all who see it.
Other experiences include the Topiary Garden, which brings to life these “living sculptures” in a powerful and whimsical display. The East Conservatory showcases the convergence of Longwood’s horticultural expertise with the artist’s vision of form and color in a breathtaking spectacle. In the Silver Garden, an arid, still landscape by day is transformed into an undulating, moving experience. Finally, multiple levels of color and light animate the towering palms of the Palm House.
Beer Garden Features Longwood Brew
Longwood is debuting its first ever Beer Garden featuring Victory Brewing Company. Dine with friends and family under the stars while enjoying pub-style fare and a variety of beers on tap, including a new Longwood signature brew, Longwood Seasons: Summer Zest, created by Victory Brewing Company using lemons grown at Longwood.
Nightscape Programming
Throughout Nightscape, Longwood will offer a variety of special programs and activities for guests to enjoy. These include live music, Family Nights, and a new Artist & Friends speaker series. A Nightscape ticket is required for admission to the programs and Beer Garden.
Each Thursday in the Beer Garden regional artists perform live from 7-10 pm. Bluegrass artist Marc Silver, Gypsy jazz performer Jon Dichter, soulful music innovator Angela Sheik, and acoustic pop performer Dani Mari are slated to appear. Check longwoodgardens.org for the performance schedule.

Klip Collective is a visual art shop bridging projection lighting, technology and storytelling. Klip was founded by photographer Pier Nicola DʼAmico and video artist Ricardo Rivera in 2003 to create immersive video projection experiences. Chadds Ford Days began as a way to commemorate the Revolutionary War Battle of Brandywine that was fought on September 11, 1777. This important battle played a pivotal role in shaping our nation's future. Although the battle was lost, it helped improve military tactics that resulted in winning the War of Independence and saving America.
As the years went by, the Chadds Ford Days festival grew to include over 60 of the region's finest craftsmen and colonial demonstrators, Revolutionary War reenactors, an array of culinary fare from local restaurants, brewers and vintners, antique cars, children's activities, live music, special exhibits, historic tours of the John Chads House and so much more.
Admission is $10 for adults 18 and older; free for children under 17. CFHS members are free with membership card. Dogs are welcome too!

Newlin Grist Mill, at 219 S. Cheyney Road is hosting a free nature walk that explores big trees, old trees, rare trees, and trees that have witnessed history. Led by park naturalist Jessica Shahan, participants will be introduced to dendrology, the study of trees. Walkers will learn the history of the trees on site, as well as the basics of tree identification, core sampling and using tree-rings to calculate age.
The walk takes place Saturday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. The Trees of Newlin Nature Walk is part of Newlin Grist Mill’s Faces of Newlin - Talks at the Mill speaker series.
