Author, poet and filmmaker Christianna Hannum Miller, whose stories have been called “funny, dark, arresting, magical, and sparkly” will present Tiny Stories at the library. It is the first installment in a Salon Series focusing on music, art and literature at the library. Hannum Miller studied art history and Italian at the University of Pennsylvania and has worked in women’s health, education and art, most recently at The Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. Visitors will enjoy a feast of decorative and visual art along with unparalleled examples of 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century antiques at the Brandywine River Museum of Art Antiques Show on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25. Visitors can purchase fine antiques, from furniture and rugs to porcelain, needlework and more from 30 distinguished dealers, and see outstanding Wyeth and American art on view in the galleries, including the special exhibition, Horace Pippin: The Way I See It.

This year, for the first time, the dealers will be located in the Museum's atrium, as well as in the courtyard and lecture room. Thirty dealers, who travel from as far away as Florida, Michigan and Maine, will showcase American country and formal furniture, folk art, glass, quilts, clock cases, accessories and much more. The Brandywine River Museum of Art is renowned for its holdings of the Wyeth family of artists, with galleries dedicated to the works of N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, as well as dozens of other artists. Volunteers Make the Show Possible The passionate involvement and hard work of more than 100 volunteers makes the Show, now in its 44th year, a success. Proceeds from the Antiques Show benefit the Museum Volunteers' Art Purchase Fund, and Art and Education Programming. |
Special Decorative Arts Exhibition
| This year's exhibition is Plus Ultra: Moravian Tiles of the New World. During the age of exploration the motto Plus Ultra reflected the belief that there was "more beyond" the known world. Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930), founded the Arts and Crafts style Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown, Pennsylvania in 1898. First produced in 1912, Mercer designed an epic relief tile cycle on the theme of the New World. Mercer continued to add to the series over the years, expanding it to more than 70 tiles. This exhibition features 25 of the original tile designs of the New World series, commissioned for a gracious home in Pennsylvania, where they remained for nearly 70 years. This exhibition marks the first reinstallation of these tiles, which will be displayed as continuous frieze as they were originally intended. |

Lecture topics include miniature portraits and silhouettes; 18th- and 19th-century militaria; acceptable restoration ofAmerican furniture; and American folk art; yellowware; oriental rugs; and trade secrets of the antiques business.
Admission & Hours Show admission: $18 per day. A three-day pass is available for $45. The show is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Philly POPS at Longwood for Memorial Day Concert Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be s musical tribute to the nation's current and past servicemen and women and will be a patriotic and Broadway-themed concert conducted by the esteemed Todd Ellison in a 90-minute show featuring award-winning vocalists Klea Blackhurst, Kathryn Guthrie, and Ross Lekites and the 65-member Philly POPS orchestra.
Reserved seating tickets for POPS at Longwood Gardens are available for $55-$85 ($50-$80 for Longwood Gardens Members) and may be purchased online through Longwood Gardens or by calling 215.893.1999. The Kennett Square Memorial Day Parade kicks off at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25. The parade route is from Union Street, right on Cypress, left at Broad, left on State, right at Union, ends at Union Hill Cemetery.
The Kennett Square Memorial Day Parade is a patriotic hometown parade that honors the community's local veterans, past and present. It features hundreds of units from historic reenactors, marching bands, antique cars and military vehicles, to floats and dance troupes.

African Americans in World War I Lecture

Horace Pippin's experiences as a soldier in World War I greatly influenced his work as an artist. As he later commented, "The war brought out all of the art in me." Pippin served in the 369th US Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Harlem Hellfighters." Chad Williams, author of Torchbearers of Democracy: African American Soldiers in the World War I Era, will discuss the fascinating history of this regiment and the significant impact of World War I on African Americans. The Museum will open at 5:30 p.m. with the presentation at 6 p.m. and a reception to follow.

The first Wednesday of the month, we will have our 18th century dance class. The class is open to all, novice to experienced. There is no fee and you are welcome with or without a partner. The classes run from 7:15 PM to approximately 9:00 PM and we adjourn for a short break and light refreshments midway through the evening. The dress is casual, modern clothing; period garb is definitely not required or encouraged at these lessons.
The classes are held each month at the "Barn" of the Chadds Ford Historical Society. The Barn is located approximately one half mile north of Route 1 at 1736 Creek Road (old Route 100) in Chadds Ford, PA. If you are driving north on Creek Road from Route 1, the Barn is on your left hand side directly across from the John Chad house. You should pass the Barn building, make a left into the parking lot, drive around the back of the building and enter through the large gray double doors between the round stone pillars. Come up the stairs to the main floor and turn right into the large meeting room where we practice.
The class has been taught each month for many years by Laura Bailey to the delight of her many students. Laura makes the trip from Lancaster each month to teach in Chadds Ford. She also teaches similar classes in Carlisle, PA and in New Castle, DE.
Recently the group has been meeting at a local restaurant for an "after dance" drink, dessert or dinner. If your schedule permits, please plan to join us after the dance for a pleasant social hour to unwind at mid-week.
