True to Himself: The Art and Life of Horace Pippin Lecture

This discussion will trace Pippin's development as a self-taught artist and his place in American art history. Audrey Lewis, associate curator and curator of the exhibition, will lead the discussion, joined by noted scholars Jacqueline Francis and Anne Monahan. The Museum will open at 5:30 p.m. with the presentation at 6 p.m. and a reception to follow.

The first Wednesday of the month, we will have our 18th century dance class. The class is open to all, novice to experienced. There is no fee and you are welcome with or without a partner. The classes run from 7:15 PM to approximately 9:00 PM and we adjourn for a short break and light refreshments midway through the evening. The dress is casual, modern clothing; period garb is definitely not required or encouraged at these lessons.
The classes are held each month at the "Barn" of the Chadds Ford Historical Society. The Barn is located approximately one half mile north of Route 1 at 1736 Creek Road (old Route 100) in Chadds Ford, PA. If you are driving north on Creek Road from Route 1, the Barn is on your left hand side directly across from the John Chad house. You should pass the Barn building, make a left into the parking lot, drive around the back of the building and enter through the large gray double doors between the round stone pillars. Come up the stairs to the main floor and turn right into the large meeting room where we practice.
The class has been taught each month for many years by Laura Bailey to the delight of her many students. Laura makes the trip from Lancaster each month to teach in Chadds Ford. She also teaches similar classes in Carlisle, PA and in New Castle, DE.
Recently the group has been meeting at a local restaurant for an "after dance" drink, dessert or dinner. If your schedule permits, please plan to join us after the dance for a pleasant social hour to unwind at mid-week.

World Renowned Choral Composer Ola Gjeilo to Perform with the
Unionville High School Choir Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 7 p.m.
This past December, the Unionville High School (UHS) Winter Choir Concert featured a riveting piece, Sanctus: London by Grammy Award-winning choral composer Ola Gjeilo. A reverent silence fell over the crowd as the magnificent student chorale ensemble performed the work with brilliance and emotion.
Jason Throne, UHS’s Vocal Music Director, was so moved by the performance that he decided to send Gjeilo a video recording. Much to Throne’s pleasant surprise, Gjeilo responded to his email and praised the UHS students’ skill level and composure and offered to join the group onstage at their upcoming spring concert featuring many of his works.
“I almost fell out of my chair when Gjeilo offered to attend our spring performance,” Throne said. “He will rehearse with the students and accompany them onstage playing piano. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the students to work with a composer of his caliber.”
Ola Gjeilo was born in Norway in 1978 and moved to the United States in 2001 to begin his composition studies at the Julliard School in New York City.
Ola’s concert works are performed all over the world and his debut recording as a pianist-composer, the lyrical crossover album, Stone Rose, was followed by its 2012 sequel, Piano Improvisations. Many of Ola’s choral works are featured on Phoenix Chorale’s Grammy Award-winning bestselling Northern Lights album, which is devoted entirely to his music for choir.
A full-time concert music composer, Ola is also very interested in film and his music often draws inspiration from movies and cinematic music. He currently lives in New York City with his wife Laura.

On May 8 from 7 to 9 p.m., the Friends Association for Care & Protection of Children will host their second annual “A Night at the Opera” concert to benefit families and children. The concert will feature arias from operas performed by Friend Association’s executive director Catherine Friedman, a graduate of Westminster Choir College of Rider University. The concert will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester, and will be followed by a dessert reception. Suggested donations to reserve tickets are $25 per person. The two-day tour of 47 local studios and 100 artists takes place on Saturday, May 16 from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 17 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
There are not many annual events that live up to the motto, “Engage with the Arts.”
The annual Chester County Studio Tour, held May 16th and May 17th, is especially well-organized and fine-tuned to do just that – engage patrons and artists in the places where art is created.
The tour has been described as the region's first and only annual tour designed to showcase the diverse art work found in "Andrew Wyeth's country.” For this year’s tour, there will be a considerable expansion – 100 artists in 47 studios across Chester County. But the idea of showcasing the talent of the county is still the same.
Many of the artists are grouped together at each stop, highlighting the diversity of mediums professional artists work in today, such as paper, porcelain, metal, clay and steel. This year's participating artists will be creating one unique 6- x 6- inch piece of original art and selling it for $75. Chester County Studio Tour wants to make art affordable for everyone and wants to show that art can be everywhere. Whether this is your first time buying original art or you are a seasoned collector, the tour now has something for everyone.
Visitors are encouraged to design their own self-guided tour with the catalogue, you can simply download a map or catalogue from ChesterCountyStudioTour.com and head for the studio closest to you. However, for those collectors looking for a specific kind of art or who want to take the scenic route from studio to studio, the web site offers links to specific routes such as the sculpture / ceramic and the landscape/ Plein Air (outdoor painting) tours.
The studios are scattered throughout Chester County, tucked away in the alleys of small towns or in flower-filled neighborhood back yards and townhomes.
For these artists, it seems, almost any structure will do - the former living room of a contemporary home, a structure that resembles a pool house, or a former bedroom - as long as it gives them plenty of light and enough room to work on their large sculptures or paintings. All of these studios are working studios, many of them will feature artists demonstrations, or works-in-progress , enabling the visitor to get a rare glimpse into how a professional artist creates.
