A Holiday Happening in West Chester
Dec 6 @ 18:00 – 20:00

Local residents can start the season with a double decker of holiday spirit when Uptown! Entertainment Alliance (UEA) partners with the Pennsylvania Academy of Performing Arts (PAPA) to present its third annual Christmas Show in West Chester on Saturday, December 6th.   The evening will begin with a 6 p.m. performance of “A Christmas Carol…More or Less” at the West Chester Historical Society on North High Street, followed by a 7 p.m. candlelit Christmas Carol Walk through downtown West Chester.

Director Kristin McLaughlin Mitchell describes the staged reading of “A Christmas Carol…More or Less” as a hysterical retelling of the beloved holiday classic, appropriate for all ages: “When a snow storm keeps the cast and crew of ‘A Christmas Carol’ from getting to the theater, can Charlie and Sarah, the show’s producers, keep the show from being cancelled by playing all the parts themselves?”

“A Christmas Carol…More or Less” stars Tom Wang of West Chester and Sue Murphy and features the PAPA chorus, who will lead the audience in a candlelit Christmas Carol Walk to the County Courthouse steps immediately following the performance.  Both events are a part of West Chester’s  annual Old-Fashioned Christmas Celebration, called “one of the top ten places to experience the arrival of Santa Claus during the holiday season” by USA Today.

According to Uptown! Entertainment Alliance spokesperson Angela Scully, the show is free ($5 donation suggested), with all proceeds benefitting UEA’s mission to bring a performing arts theater to West Chester.

Marshall Steam Museum at Christmas
Dec 7 @ 12:00 – 15:00

YORKLYN, DE – Join us in celebrating the coming of winter with an old-fashioned twist and enjoy an afternoon of fun at the museum (and at a discount too!) before we close for the winter. Explore the Marshall Steam Museum decorated for the holidays for two special days in December. As always, a visit to the Marshall Steam Museum allows visitors to step back in time and imagine what American life was like when the automobile was coming of age. Through our special photo exhibit for this holiday program: Snow Travelers: Experiencing Winter at the Dawn of the Automotive Age, we explore how winter travel changed (or did not) as a result of the growing popularity of the automobile. Some early motorists would store their cars for the winter and revert to more traditional modes of travel such as sleighs while others sought to adapt their automobiles for the snowy months through accessories. In addition, visitors of all ages can enjoy a display of early tire chains, Victorian holiday decorations, special reading of classics such as The Polar Express, electric trains demonstrations, and family-friends kids’ activities and crafts.

Admission: $5 non-members; free for FAHP members

Pre-registration is encouraged for this program as space is limited.

Please note that this is not a Steamin’ Day event. The Auburn Heights mansion will be closed, and there will be no train or auto rides. Limited group tours and private children’s program available the week of December 8 to December 12.

Operated by the Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve in partnership with Delaware State Parks, the Marshall Steam Museum is located at 3000 Creek Rd. (Rte 82) in Yorklyn, Delaware. (Use Hockessin for GPS) Ample parking available.
