When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put into protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won’t be found-a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her fabulous disco-ness and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon it’s nun-on-the-run time but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood. | October 18 at Wyebrook Farm in Honey Brook starting at 8:30 a.m.The Brandywine Conservancy is calling for volunteers to help plant 2,900 trees this fall for the organization's Reforestation Campaign. The Brandywine/
Christina Basin provides 100 million gallons per day of drinking water to over 500,000 people in three states; reforesting the watershed ensures and improves water quality. Please click here for directions No experience is necessary. Volunteers are asked to bring a shovel, mallet and gloves if possible, dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes. The planting will start at 8:30 a.m. both days, and last until early afternoon. Snacks will be provided at each planting. Victory Brewing Company will provide beverages at the October 18 planting at Wyebrook, and volunteers from Guardians of the Brandywine will help plant.
Planting trees enhances water quality, restores natural flows in the Brandywine, and improves plant and animal habitat. Trees provide food and shelter for life in and around streams, promote absorption of rain into the ground, replenish groundwater supplies, and reduce storm water runoff and downstream flooding. In addition, tree leaves, branches, and roots reduce erosion and prevent excess sediment and nutrients from entering streams during heavy rains.
The Conservancy is midway through its "50 by 50" campaign to plant 50,000 trees by 2017, having planted its milestone 25,000th tree in April 2014. The campaign targets the vulnerable steep slopes and riparian areas (strips of land immediately adjacent to a stream) because these locations are especially vulnerable to erosion, and, when reforested, are the most effective at filtering sediments and other pollutants before they reach streams, creeks and rivers.
"We are proud to work with the community to improve water quality from the source to the spigot in the Brandywine Watershed throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware," said Sherri Evans-Stanton, director of the Brandywine Conservancy.
The upcoming plantings include 900 trees to be planted at the Pocopson Home in West Chester on September 27 and 2,000 trees to be planted at Wyebrook Farm in Honey Brook, on the Upper East Branch of the Brandywine, on October 18. The plantings are financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Financing Authority.

The Delaware Art Museum presents From Houdini to Hugo: The Art of Brian Selznick this fall. On view from October 18, 2014 through January 11, 2015, this traveling exhibition presents over 100 paintings and drawings by Brian Selznick, an award-winning children's author and illustrator. Selznick's world includes images of characters as diverse as magician Harry Houdini, poet Walt Whitman, singer Marian Anderson, and the fictional Hugo Cabret--an orphan who lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station. In 2008, Selznick was awarded the Caldecott Medal for The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which was made into the Oscar award-winning film Hugo (2011), directed by Martin Scorsese.
Selznick's illustrations animate the imaginations of children and adults with his blending of illusion, history, and adventure. From Houdini to Hugo: The Art of Brian Selznick encompasses works from Hugo and 18 of Selznick's other books, among them The Houdini Box, Walt Whitman: Words for America, Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride, The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins, and Frindle. The exhibition will also include books, allowing visitors to put each work of art into the context of the story.
From Houdini to Hugo: The Art of Brian Selznick complements the Delaware Art Museum's world-renowned collection of illustration and works by well-known illustrators such as Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth. Highlights from the Museum's Illustration collection will be on display in the first and second floor galleries through January 2015.

A crisp fall evening is the perfect time to get out with the family to enjoy music, pageantry, and fun! Unionville High School invites you to the “March on the Brandywine” marching band competition on Saturday, October 18, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
This event features the area’s best high school musicians and color guard squads in friendly competition—it’s like one exciting halftime show after another! Judges from the Cavalcade of Bands, Inc. will rate the bands for precision, creativity, musicality, and complexity. Participating high schools are Bridgeton, Conestoga Valley, Downington West, Eastern York, Kennett, Marple Newtown, Methacton, Pottstown, Sun Valley and West Chester East. When the competing bands are finished, the Unionville High School Marching Band will treat the audience to a unique collection of images in an unforgiving environment where nomads roam the dunes in a desperate search for water in an exhibition of its 2014 show, “Mirage.” The evening concludes with an awards ceremony.
