Free community event takes place in Kennett Square on September 27
KENNETT SQUARE _ The 4th annual ¡Vive tu vida! Get Up! Get Moving!® event is expected to draw about 2,000 people to Anson B. Nixon Park on Saturday, September 27, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
“This is a wonderful event each year and it is growing in attendance,” said Margarita Queralt Mirkil, President and Chief Executive Officer of La Comunidad Hispana (LCH). “You can’t beat free family fun that promotes healthy living.”
¡Vive tu vida! Get Up! Get Moving!® is open to the public and will be held rain or shine. The national sponsor is the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. The local partners are LCH, the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley and the Mexican Consulate.
“We have excellent community support,” Mirkil said. “Along with our partner organizations, our three Platinum sponsors, Chester County Food Bank, Christiana Health Care Systems, and GIANT Foods are providing essential contributions to the event.”

No matter where your travels take you, area police departments will require only a short detour to locations set up for the semiannual National Drug Take Back Initiative.
Sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the program provides a safe opportunity for disposing of expired, unused, unwanted medication. Law-enforcement officials warn that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.
Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends – or taken from home medicine cabinets. Another reason to turn the drugs over to police? The usual methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose potential safety and health hazards, according to the DEA.
On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., area residents can prevent pill abuse at the following locations: the Kennett Square Police Department, 115 N. Broad St., Kennett Square; Anson B. Nixon Park (part of the Vive tu Vida Health Fair event), Water Works Drive, Kennett Square; the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department, Giant supermarket, 1375 E. Boot Rd., West Chester; the Media barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police, 1342 W. Baltimore Pike, Media; and the Avondale barracks of the state police, 2 Moxley Lane, Avondale.
The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. The prescription drugs that are turned in at collection sites are boxed up in special containers and delivered to a DEA main collection site for safe disposal, according to police.
In April, Americans turned in 390 tons of prescription drugs at nearly 6,100 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,400 of its state and local law enforcement partners. When those results are combined with what was collected in its eight previous Take Back events, DEA and its local law-enforcement partners reported that they have taken in over 4.1 million pounds — more than 2,100 tons — of pills.

WHAT: Amanda C. Burdan, Brandywine River Museum of Art associate curator, will discuss paintings that depict the historic Barns-Brinton House. Painted over the years by well-known local artists such as Barclay Rubicam, Andrew Wyeth, Paul Scarborough and Karl Kuerner, the house is still a magnet for artists and history-lovers. Tea and cookies will be served following the lecture.
The Chadds Ford Historical Society celebrates the 300th anniversary of the Barns-Brinton House in 2014. Rescued from demolition by the Historical Society in 1968 and carefully restored under the guidance of historic restoration architect John Milner, the home is open for public tours in the summer.

Infamous for his skewering of political figures, Little has charmed, amused, intrigued and gotten the best of politicians from here to his native Canada. He entertained at both of Reagan’s presidential inaugurations and got to know the Reagan family very well during that time. President Reagan used to tell Little, “You do me better than I do.”
Appearances on TV variety shows starring Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, Glen Campbell and Dean Martin followed, as well as on series such as Laugh-In, The John Davidson Summer Show and The Julie Andrews Show. Little also had his own variety show in the 70s and was the star of the TV show KopyKats. Little was a guest host early on for The Tonight Show, hosting 12 times. He quickly became a household name sitting in one of the Hollywood Squares and went on to do the Muppet Show.
Named “Comedy Star of the Year” by the American Guild of Variety Artists, Little was the perpetrator of nine comedy albums and three HBO comedy specials, as well as the Emmy-award winning specials “Rich Little’s Christmas Carol” with “W.C. Fields” as Scrooge, “Humphrey Bogart” as one of the ghosts and “Paul Lynde” as Bob Cratchit.
A professed classic movie buff, he’s particularly fond of doing Alan Ladd (his childhood hero), Gary Cooper and Clark Gable, but Little has also latched on to Baby Boomer-friendly characters, such as Edith Bunker, Kermit the Frog, Robin Leach and Dr. Ruth Westheimer, to name a few. Some of his favorite current impressions are of stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dr. Phil, Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood. “They’re easy to do,” he says. “They are larger than life.”

Birmingham Township Recreation, Parks & Open Spaces Committee. are installing a plaque on a bench at the Birmingham Hill Park (just a very short distance down the road from the Meetinghouse) in honor of Jim Phreanor and his work with their committee over the years. They wanted the Meeting members to be a part of the dedication of this plaque. The brief ceremony/dedication/unveiling will take place after Meeting for Worship on Sunday at 11:15, September 28. Natural Lands Trust invites area residents to kick up their heels at the ChesLen Chase for Open Space on Saturday, Oct. 25. Proceeds from the event, which will begin at 11 a.m. and include a 10K run, a 5K run, and a 1.5-mile run/walk, will benefit ChesLen Preserve, one of the largest private nature preserves in southeastern Pennsylvania.
