Chadds Ford artist, Karl J. Kuerner says of two his students, Kirkwood and Smyers, "I have found of all the years I have worked with people that have talent...there are few that really see it through. I keep remembering what Carolyn Wyeth and her brother said to me, 'Paint what you know and your soul will come out and people respond'. These two women, Marie Kirkwood and Pamela Smyers are doing just that. Their uniqueness and love for what they do speaks volumes."
Growing up in the Brandywine Valley, Pamela Julian-Smyers always felt a kinship and spirit needed by artists to create imagery with emotions on canvas. Fascinated by the spirit which she feels is the driving force behind her work, painting symbolic representations of experiences and emotions , allows her subject matter to be diverse. Pondering hidden meanings in Andrew Wyeth's paintings, the stylized paintings of Gustav Klimt, starkness of Georgia O'Keefe and the symbolism of Frida Kahlo, have been her inspirations. Occasionally painting on canvas, her medium of choice is acrylic paint on wood panels. She enjoys lightly stippling washes of color on top of one another, allowing all applied colors to emerge. "I find beauty in everything" ... a delicate flower may symbolize how fragile one can feel during times of sorrow. In contrast, a powerful owl may symbolize strength, courage and determination. Pamela finds her peace immersed in nature, gardening and wildlife. Pamela lives in Glen Mills with her husband, Jim, their two daughters, Mei and Jade.
Marie C. Kirkwood’s dedication to art and sensing a similar sense of spirit that surrounds her, when she catches a glimpse of wild creatures in their native habitats, also led her to study with Karl Kuerner, wildlife artists Robert Bateman and Terry Isaacs, Kirkwood says, "My intention when painting, is to capture that spirit through a visual story and share it with the viewer." Enjoying painting with watercolors, oils or acrylics, now favors, to her, the once intimidating medium of egg tempera. A colorful Artist she met in Rousillon, France convinced Marie to purchase earth pigment powders. After a little experimentations, she discovered what beautiful effects the pigment-egg binder mix could achieve. Thoroughly researching her subject before she begins to paint wildlife, still life or landscapes she strives to convey the subject's spirit, courage, vigor and liveliness. Retired from teaching art to adults with special needs at Devereux, she lives in Boothwyn with her husband Rick and their Gordon Setter, Ally.
Pamela Julian-Smyers and Marie Kirkwood have held art workshops in multiple locations, represented by various galleries and juried exhibitions in Pennsylvania and Delaware.
