Introduce children to art this summer. Participate in one or all five of these workshops designed for children ages 3 to 10 accompanied by an adult. Each program will include a thematic, interactive guided tour followed by a creative art project. Two sessions will be held each day: Session A: 10 a.m. or Session B: 11 a.m. Workshops are free with regular museum admission. (Malvern, PA) – People’s Light & Theatre presents the regional premiere of Itamar Moses’ acclaimed comedy Bach at Leipzig running July 9-August 10, 2014 on the Steinbright Stage. Itamar Moses (Boardwalk Empire) sets his historical romp in 1722 Leipzig, Germany, where the world’s greatest organist, Johann Kuhnau, has just died in the middle of a frenzied fugue. Seven men, all claiming to be Kuhnau’s worthy successor, flock to the famous Thomaskirche (or St. Thomas Church), where Kuhnau presided over the music for Church services and the adjacent school. Blackmail and back-stabbing mix with debates on religion, philosophy, and politics as the men attempt to outdo each other in order to win Kuhnau’s prestigious position.
“Whether you are a Bach buff or prefer Lady Gaga, I think you will laugh in unison at this ingenious and hilarious tale of history’s underdogs” asserts People’s Light’s Producing Director, Zak Berkman. Director Pete Pryor adds, “One of the most delightful aspects of the work is how Itamar has purposefully set the piece up as a fugue. Each character needs the other to complete the piece. Themes are represented and then repeated with variations. Each of the characters is barreling desperately to his own inevitable outcome.”
All of Moses’ characters were contemporaries of J.S. Bach and each of them did, in fact, audition to be Kuhnau’s replacement. Beyond that, the play is fictional. To play Moses’ comic take on these historic figures, long-time People’s Light company member Kevin Bergen portrays Georg Balthasar Schott, David Ingram plays Johann Christoph Graupner, and Stephen Novelli takes on Georg Friedrich Kaufmann. They are joined by Greg Wood as Johann Friedrich Fasch. Making their People’s Light debuts are Danny Gardner as Johann Martin Steindorff and Jabari Brisport as Georg Lenck.

Pete is the Associate Artistic Director and proud company member at People’s Light. He is the co-founder and former Producing Artistic Director of 1812 Productions in Philadelphia. For the past seven years he has been the resident artist/drama instructor at the Pathway School. His play Beautiful Boy was part of our Community Matters reading series and was produced at People’s Light. Pete is a Lunt-Fontanne fellow and Independence Fellowship Artist and winner of four Barrymore Awards. He directed last season’s Noises Off as well as the last six holiday pantos and will co-author and direct next season’s panto, Arthur & The Tale of the Red Dragon.

Kevin is thrilled to be back at People’s Light where he last appeared as Noah Curry in The Rainmaker. Other Philadelphia region credits include: The Walnut Street Theatre, The Wilma Theatre, Arden Theatre Company, Bristol Riverside Theatre, and InterAct Theatre Company. Kevin has acted at numerous other regional theatres including The Shakespeare Theatre, American Repertory Theatre, Commonwealth Shakespeare, The Studio Theatre (D.C.), the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, and Shenandoah Shakespeare. He is a graduate of the American Repertory Theatre Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard.

SUMMER IN LIVING COLOR: LIVE BUTTERFLY EXHIBIT OPENS AT TYLER ARBORETUM
Summer is vibrant with color, and that is especially true at Tyler Arboretum’s Butterfly House. Beautifully colored caterpillars and delicate, fluttering butterflies show off their vivid hues among the colorful plant specimens that they depend upon in this live specimen exhibit starting June 28, 2014. This year, the Butterfly House will enjoy a few enhancements, courtesy of the generous grant awarded to Tyler by Axalta Coating Systems. Tyler and Axalta will hail this new partnership that celebrates the wonderful colors of nature during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 9:30 a.m.
Dedicated volunteer docents identified a wish list of items needed to improve the existing house. The $15,000 grant from Axalta will provide additional educational signage as well as a garden feature sign for the outside of the building to attract visitors. The funds will also provide plants that will be used as food for the caterpillars and butterflies, a new butterfly identification brochure, general care and upkeep and, eventually, new benches in the Butterfly House.
“We are delighted to have Axalta as a partner for this seasonal exhibit,” says Tyler Arboretum Executive Director Rick Colbert. “They have a unique perspective on the value of color in our lives, and this is the perfect opportunity to help our guests see the wonderful array of pigments that exist in our natural world.”
Tyler Arboretum’s Butterfly House offers visitors a special opportunity to learn about, photograph and get a close-up look at local butterflies in all stages of development. The exhibit features a 1,400 square foot Butterfly House filled with native specimens including monarchs, viceroys, sulphurs, mourning cloaks, hairstreaks, red-spotted purples, great spangled fritillaries, painted ladies and swallowtails. The exhibit also includes extensive plantings that feed both butterflies and caterpillars.
The goal of Tyler’s Butterfly House exhibit is to promote greater understanding about a significant aspect of ecology and human interaction with the natural world.
“Unfortunately, butterflies and other pollinators have taken a huge hit in numbers in recent years,” said Amy Mawby, Director of Public Programs at Tyler. “They are essential for the health and sustainability of our ecosystems. We are happy and excited to have support from a company like Axalta so we can continue our educational efforts with the public.”
“As an organization that advocates sustainability, Axalta is thrilled to partner with Tyler Arboretum,” says Nigel Budden, Axalta VP and Head of its North America Business. “We also believe color should be brilliant and butterflies provide an example of vivid color coming to life.”
The Butterfly House exhibit is free with the price of regular admission and open seasonally through the months of July and August.

Join us for an evening of immersive arts experiences featuring dance and music performances and art-making activities, all connected to the significance of water in our lives. The museum and galleries will open at 6 p.m. with Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art staff available to discuss the Lure of the Brandywine exhibition.
This innovative program will feature the premiere of We Are Water, an original dance by Sight-Specific, and musical improvisations by Catherine Marie Charlton from her award-winning albums, River Flow – Sanctuary and River Dawn: Piano Meditations. Nature is an integral part of the creative process for Sight-Specific, a dance company from Brooklyn, New York. Artistic director Emie Hughes’s childhood experiences with the Brandywine River during her Chadds Ford childhood provided inspiration for this dance. Catherine Marie Charlton is a Steinway Artist whose music has been praised for its “tranquil, yet evocative flow.”
Full bar and small-plate offerings available for purchase. The program is included with museum admission free for Brandywine members and children under 6.
On Saturday, July 12, admission will be free all day in honor of Andrew Wyeth's birthday.
Families will enjoy a special "Water Moves" workshop from 10 a.m. to noon where they will investigate the dynamic qualities of water through first-hand observation, creative mapping and art projects. To reinforce the importance of clean water for all living things, families will pot native plants to take home. Workshop projects are suitable for all ages. The Kennett Symphony presents its 2nd annual Beat Beethoven 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on Thursday, July 17, 2014, 6:30 pm. The Run/Walk is for all ages and abilities of runners and walkers. Besides having fun and supporting the Kennett Symphony, the object of the race is to finish before Beethoven’s famous 5th Symphony finishes – approximately 32 minutes.
