Kennett Square, PA – The Kennett Symphony of Chester County, under the direction of guest conductor, Dr. Robert Spence, will present American Patchwork at its annual Children’s Concerts on Sunday, March 2, 2014, 2 pm, at the International Cultural Center on the campus of Lincoln University AND on Sunday, March 9, 2014, 2 pm, at Emilie K. Asplundh Hall, Phillips Memorial Building, on the campus of West Chester University

The Kennett Symphony’s Annual Children’s Concerts are presented in an educational, interactive and fun format. This year’s concerts include learning about the instruments of the orchestra (strings, winds, brass, and percussion) and the performance of symphonic and choral favorites by American composers.  Following each performance, the Symphony will offer special activities and its popular Instrument Zoo, during which children meet and greet the musicians of the Kennett Symphony, making this a memorable experience for the whole family!

The concerts feature the Kennett Symphony Children’s Chorus and pianist, Dr. Justin Badgerow. The program includes Sousa’s patriotic Liberty Bell March, Anderson’s surprising The Typewriter, Copland’s I Bought Me a Cat and Simple Gifts, MacDowell’s Presto Giocoso from Piano Concerto No. 2, and Ginastera’s Danza Final.

Develop an environmentally-friendly landscape plan for your yard

This educational six-week series instructs homeowners on how to create and maintain healthy and beautiful landscapes by working with nature. The good news is that even one home garden can begin to repair the web of life. It is possible to create a great–looking garden that’s healthier for you, your family, pets, and the environment - and that saves you time and money.

Based on the principles of the Sustainable Sites Initiative, these classes explore the role of soils, water, vegetation, and materials in a sustainable landscape. Be prepared to take the basic measurements of your suburban lot or bring your site plan to the first session. These measurements and plans will be used in an exercise applying these principles to your own landscape.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) is an interdisciplinary effort by the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the United States Botanic Garden to create voluntary national guidelines and performance benchmarks for sustainable land design, construction, and maintenance practices (similar to LEED certification in buildings). This class adds Mt. Cuba Center’s perspective to the Landscape for Life series helping you to cultivate the best landscape practices for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Eileen Boyle is the director of education and research at Mt. Cuba Center. Previously she was the director of horticulture at the Philadelphia Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. She has also worked as a horticulture professor, an administrator for the New York City’s parks, and for the USDA.

Margaret Shillingford is the education coordinator at Mt. Cuba Center. During her 20 plus year career in agricultural research, Margaret was also  a docent at Mt. Cuba Center and pursued a Masters in Education.

Chester County Planning Commission to host
Public Transportation Plan Public Meeting (Rescheduled)

The Chester County Planning Commission (CCPC) in partnership with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) is developing a county-wide Public Transportation Plan to guide transit operations and capital improvements in Chester County.

Chester County residents, transit users, project stakeholders, and the public are encouraged to attend a Public Meeting to be held at the Chester County Library and District Center in Exton (adjacent to the Exton Mall) on Wednesday March 5^th, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.  This meeting was originally to be held on February 5^th, however was postponed due to the weather.

Attendees will have the opportunity to offer their input towards desired improvements of public transit services in Chester County.  Participants will be informed regarding the overall plan progress, analysis findings, potential performance measures, and DRAFT recommendations, as well as the results of the 2013 Public Workshop held in April 2013 at the Chester County Historical Society.  The meeting will be an open house format with a formal presentation starting at 7:00 PM.

DVRPC’s Office of Transit, Bicycle, and Pedestrian Planning staff facilitated the first phase of the project, which entailed data collection, issue identification, and preliminary corridor prioritization.  This work began late in 2012 and continued through the summer of 2013.  The second phase of this plan – led by CCPC staff— is to develop goals and policies, define future transit corridors, and guide capital improvements throughout Chester County.

The Public Transportation Plan is targeted for completion in the summer of 2014.  The County will then begin the process of adopting the plan as an element to Landscapes2, Chester County’s Comprehensive Plan.  The adoption process is anticipated to be completed by the Fall of 2014.

The Public Transportation Plan Public Meeting will be held Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at the transit-accessible Chester County Library and District Center located at 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton, PA 19341 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

Local author/historian Gene Pisasale delves into the causes, the events, the personalities, the major battles, the Generals and the aftermath of 

THE CIVIL WAR

This presentation highlights stops along the Underground Railroad in Kennett Square, along with the "Bucktails"- a group of volunteers from our area who fought for the Union throughout the war, including the climactic Battle of Gettysburg. Gene's presentation showcases historical sites around the Chester County/Philadelphia area.

Gene Pisasale is the author of six books and writes a regular column titled 

"Living History" which runs in

The Chester County Press, The Hunt Magazine and other media outlets. He's presented lectures at The Union League in Philadelphia, Brandywine Battlefield Park, the Hotel du Pont and the University and Whist Club in Wilmington along with numerous other venues. Gene is an approved Speaker for the Delaware Humanities Forum.

The Delaware Art Museum is pleased to present the first retrospective exhibition dedicated to the photographer Scott Heiser (1949-1993), a Wilmington, Delaware native. Fashion, Circus, Spectacle: Photographs by Scott Heiser, on view March 8 - June 1, 2014, introduces the accomplishments of Heiser's vibrant career, presenting 80 stunning black-and-white prints produced by the artist, as well as a slideshow of his seldom-seen color photographs. Heiser's images document the cultural cross-pollination of art, fashion, and photography in New York in the 1970s and 80s.

Heiser was best known for his grainy, wildly cropped glimpses of fashion runway shows, which appeared in Interview between 1978 and 1986. The magazine sent him around New York, Paris, and Milan to capture fashions by Claude Montana, Yves Saint Laurent, Shamask, and Issey Miyake. He provided an insider's view of the shows and captured the movement of the clothing and the energy of the scene.

Heiser also chronicled the vibrant cultural landscape of New York City, producing portraits of Andy Warhol, Jamie Wyeth, Debbie Harry, Marianne Faithfull, Alberta Hunter, and Robert Wilson for Interview, Soho Weekly News, and Paper. In the early 1980s, Heiser expanded his field, beginning to document a wide range of public entertainments, including circuses, dance competitions, the Miss America Pageant, the Ice Capades, and the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

He brought a unique perspective to his subjects, focusing on significant details, arresting figures in motion, and capturing individuals on the fringes of large events. His extreme angles and eccentric cropping intensified the strangeness of these performances, drawing comparisons with Surrealist photographers like Man Ray and André Kertész. Heiser was also influenced by earlier photographers, such as Cecil Beaton, George Platt Lynes, Diane Arbus, and Garry Winogrand.

Although his work was published and shown frequently during his lifetime, Heiser has never been the subject of a museum exhibition, and no monograph about him has been published. The Delaware Art Museum owns nine of his fashion photographs, which were the inspiration for this exhibition.

"When I encountered these photographs in storage, I was captivated by the dramatic compositions and beautiful printing," explains Heather Campbell Coyle, Curator of American Art at the Delaware Art Museum. "I couldn't believe that he wasn't better known. It is such an exciting opportunity to rediscover his photographs and present them again to the world."

Wine and Fondue Weekends

12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

These tastings are a first for us.  This is a casual format, you get to pick one or do both.  If you choose either Cheese or Chocolate option, you will get a plate of things to dip in the fondue and a glass to do the tasting (6 wines).  We will give you some suggestions, but this is more of a social tasting and for you to experiment with our food friendly wines.  This is not a guided tasting, but seating will be available for you.  To make notes and comments about the staff.  No reservations needed.  Cheese or Chocolate $20 each or if you opt for both, $35 (and taste 9 wines).  We will also have our traditional tasting as well.

Chocolate Fondue (S'mores Fondue and Dark Chocolate Fondue)

You will recieve a plate of pretzels, marshmallows, pound cake, strawberries, and graham crackers.

Cheese Fondue (Swiss Cheese and Cheddar Fondue)
