“The Business of Illustrated Calendars” Exhibit Opens
Jan 25 @ 10:00 – 16:00

January 25 – May 18, 2014
A Date with Art: The Business of Illustrated Calendars Howard Pyle, Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth—foremost illustrators in the first half of the 20th century—created some of their best-known images for advertising calendars. Calendars hung in millions of homes, shops and offices, providing artists with an opportunity to disseminate their work to a much broader audience than that for books or magazines.
A Date with Art: The Business of Illustrated Calendars introduces visitors to the once-thriving, lucrative business of illustrated calendars. From Parrish’s haunting work for General Electric’s Edison Mazda brand to Norman Rockwell’s
iconic images for the Boy Scouts of America, calendar images contributed greatly to an artist’s popular reputation. Yet just as these four artists reaped financial benefit and fame by creating art for calendars, the connection to commercial ventures at times undermined their critical reputations as artists. This exhibition will reveal the various ways in which Pyle, Parrish, Rockwell and Wyeth integrated calendar work into their careers, adapting to shifting views of contemporary art, illustration and business.

N.C. Wyeth’s America in the Making – Exhibit Opens
Jan 25 @ 10:00 – 16:00

January 25 to May 18, 2014
Images of inspirational and patriotic events in American history, from
Coronado’s 16th-century expedition through the Southwest to Abraham
Lincoln’s second inaugural address in 1865, will be on view in this exhibition.
N.C. Wyeth’s America in the Making features 12 dramatic paintings, created
by the artist in the late 1930s for a popular advertising calendar, and shows
Wyeth’s renowned mastery of stirring action and authentic detail. Props from
the artist’s Chadds Ford studio, such as a life mask of Abraham Lincoln, a
coonskin cap and a Kentucky rifle, will provide fascinating insight into how
Wyeth created these paintings. Visitors will be encouraged to record a calendar
image of their own that depicts an important event from American history.
The America in the Making paintings are on loan from the collection of
the Brunnier Art Museum of Iowa State University in Ames. An illustrated
catalogue from the Brunnier Art Museum will be available.

Dubac's THE MALE INTELLECT: an oxymoron?

Written and Performed by Robert Dubac
Thursday, January 23, 2014 to Sunday, January 26, 2014

Thursday - 7pm

Friday - 8pm

Saturday = 2pm and 8pm

Sunday - 2pm

Hilarious' is the only way to describe THE MALE INTELLECT: AN OXYMORON? You will laugh non-stop for ninety minutes as Robert Dubac ransacks his brain to answer the age old question, "What do women want?" All while drinking a beer. Dubac has crafted an hysterical one man multi-character show that tackles the babble of the sexes with precision and wit. With a shrug of his shoulders or a crook of his neck, Robert Dubac seamlessly transforms himself into five alter egos - each offering their own brand of misguided advice on how to straddle the gender gap.

Hailed by critics and audiences alike, THE MALE INTELLECT: AN OXYMORON? Is a rare thing; a clever combination of theater and stand-up comedy that is laugh-out-loud funny, provocative and insightful all at once. There are two types of people who should rush and see it - men and women!

"Dubac isn't one to bash men or women. He zings both equally and without hostility. He makes the process funny and entertaining, and his sharply written, nicely put together, skillfully presented show certainly is that. It is adeptly conceived, refreshingly and comically stated, and he has no trouble keeping it up for a quite diverting 90 minutes." Philadelphia Inquirer

“…full of wickedly funny observations… the male intellect is the kind of indisputably riotous show that sets off regular explosions of laughter.” Miami Herald

Why We Need More Natives In Our Gardens

Why We Need More Natives In Our Gardens
Garden for life - ours and theirs!

Date:  Tuesday, January 28, 2014;  (Snow Date: Feb. 4, 2014)
Time:  7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Cost:  $35
Instructor:  Douglas Tallamy, PhD University of Delaware

Specialized relationships between animals and plants is the norm in nature, rather than the exception. Plants that evolved in concert with local animals provide for their needs better than plants that evolved elsewhere. Doug will explain why this is so, why it is important to restore biodiversity to our residential properties, what we need to do to turn our landscapes into functioning ecosystems once again, and what we will gain by doing so. Doug will sign copies of his book, Bringing Nature Home.

Doug Tallamy is Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology and director of the Center for Managed Ecosystems at the University of Delaware in Newark, DE. He has authored 73 research articles and taught Insect Taxonomy, Behavioral Ecology, and other courses for 30 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book, Bringing Nature Home; How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens, received the 2008 Silver Medal by the Garden Writers Association.

February 7th Jason Ager is a blues-rock artist with hip-hop and R&B influences. Jason’s self-taught guit ar style is distinguished by stylized palm muting and percussive striking. He has been playing original music since picking up the guitar, and has grown a loyal following in his hometown Philadelphia music scene. With stints in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Jason is a staple in clubs from New York to Virginia. He and the C.O.P.O. move audiences to the dance floor, and Jason also performs upbeat acoustic music that tests the boundaries of the traditional singer-songwriter.

Public Transportation Plan Public Meeting
Feb 5 @ 06:00 – 08:30

Chester County Planning Commission to host
Public Transportation Plan
Public Meeting

The Chester County Planning Commission (CCPC) in partnership with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) is developing a county-wide Public Transportation Plan to guide transit operations and capital improvements in Chester County.

Chester County residents, transit users, project stakeholders, and the public are encouraged to attend a Public Meeting to be held at the Chester County Library and District Center in Exton (adjacent to the Exton Mall) on Wednesday February 5th, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.  Attendees will have the opportunity to offer their input towards desired improvements of public transit services in Chester County.  Participants will be informed regarding the overall plan progress, analysis findings, potential performance measures, and DRAFT recommendations, as well as the results of the 2013 Public Workshop held in April 2013 at the Chester County Historical Society.  The meeting will be an open house format with a formal presentation starting at 7:00 PM.

DVRPC’s Office of Transit, Bicycle, and Pedestrian Planning staff facilitated the first phase of the project, which entailed data collection, issue identification, and preliminary corridor prioritization.  This work began late in 2012 and continued through the summer of 2013.  The second phase of this plan – led by CCPC staff— is to develop goals and policies, define future transit corridors, and guide capital improvements throughout Chester County.

The Public Transportation Plan is targeted for completion in the summer of 2014.  The County will then begin the process of adopting the plan as an element to Landscapes2, Chester County’s Comprehensive Plan.  The adoption process is anticipated to be completed by the Fall of 2014.

The Public Transportation Plan Public Meeting will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at the transit-accessible Chester County Library and District Center located at 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton, PA 19341 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

If you have any questions, please contact Randy Waltermyer, Transportation Division Director, or Brian Styche, Transportation Planner at 610-344-6285
