Mary Ann Jung will perform Clara Barton - Red Cross Angel for the Hadley Memorial Fund on Friday, November 22, 7:30 p.m., at the Unionville Elementary School. All Hadley Fund programs are free - no tickets required. For further information see www.Hadleyfund.org or call 610-444-1855.
Mary Ann Jung is an award-winning actress and Smithsonian scholar. She has appeared on CNN, the Today Show, Good Morning America, and in newspapers around the world as she plays famous women from history. In 2002, Ms. Jung's Clara Barton show won top honors for Solo Theatrical Performance from the Maryland State Arts Council. Since 2005, the Smithsonian Institution has presented Ms. Jung's historical women for several conferences.
Ms. Jung researches and writes her own scripts, and performs in the authentic costumes, accents, and attitudes for her characters’ eras. Her shows are very energetic, interactive, and fun. They are terrific for families. In 2002 the Ambassador of France gave her highest praise for her one-of-a-kind portrayal of Queen Catherine de Medici for his guests, and in 2009 Ms. Jung (as Queen Anne of England (1665-1714) met Bristish diplomat Dominick Chilcott while celebrating the 300th birthday of this queen.
Proper ladies of Miss Barton's time (1821-1912) were supposed to be quiet, get married, have children, and stay home. Miss Barton would have none of that! She defied society’s conventions and risked her life in order to help others, thus becoming a true heroine. A passionate and moving public speaker, Ms. Jung as Clara dramatically relates how she became the first woman to work for the Federal Government, its first female department head, and America’s first woman ambassador. You’ll be swept into her story of the Civil War and the dangers of nursing at the Battle of Antietam. Finally, learn about her nine-year struggle to get America to sign the Geneva Convention and join the International Red Cross. There are few better role models than Clara Barton, who still inspires us to “Never Give Up!”.
