Between 1910 and 1960, American society underwent tumultuous and far-reaching transformations. The United States emerged as an international power of economic, industrial, and military might, while also experiencing two world wars and the Great Depression. American Moderns, 1910-1960: From O'Keeffe to Rockwell, on view at the Delaware Art Museum from October 12, 2013 through January 5, 2014, features 57 paintings and sculptures that highlight the changes in American art and culture during this fascinating half-century.This major traveling exhibition, drawn from the Brooklyn Museum's renowned American art collection, features works of art produced by leading artists of the day, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Milton Avery, Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Rockwell Kent, Joseph Stella, Elie Nadelman, and Norman Rockwell. Complementing the Delaware Art Museum's own significant holdings of 20th-century American art and illustration, American Moderns exemplifies the unique contributions to modern culture by visual artists as they looked for new ways to make their work relevant in a changing world. The range of works in this exhibition provide the opportunity to investigate a wide array of artistic styles, such as Cubism, Synchromism, Precisionism, Expressionism, and Social Realism, along with themes that explore images of modern structures, Americana, and stylized renditions of landscapes and still-life arrangements. Visitors will enjoy a cast of engaging characters including a tattoo artist, a confidence man, boxers, and independent women.
"This exhibition presents a broad and inclusive view of modern art in the United States, expanding the discussion of what is considered modern," explains Delaware Art Museum's Heather Campbell Coyle, Curator of American Art."The paintings and sculptures range in style from meticulously realist to entirely abstract, from romantic to mechanical, from nostalgic to avant-garde."
Along with the exhibition, the Museum will host a variety of events and programs including an exclusive Members Preview, gallery talks, a full-day symposium, and a free family day.

Fall family fun is in the air as the annual Pumpkin Days celebration returns to Tyler Arboretum in Media, Pa on Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.!
All are invited to attend the two-day festival at Tyler, which is not only an enjoyable time filled with family friendly activities, games, demonstrations, performances and food, but also serves as Tyler’s largest public fundraiser of the year.
“We really go all out for this,” said Sally Rogers, Special Events Manager at Tyler. “We prepare for months to make this one of the best fall festivals in the region. I think our visitors are in for a real treat this year as we have improved some of the old Pumpkin Days favorites and added some new activities on the schedule.”
Indeed, this year’s lineup of demonstrations and activities has something for everyone on both days. From the classic hay rides, pumpkin patch and pumpkin painting, scarecrow making, arts and crafts and face painting, the 2013 Pumpkin Days will also offer a moon bounce and inflatable obstacle course, a haunted tree house, pumpkin carving demonstrations by William Rush Wood Carvers Club, glitter tattoos and hair extensions by Venus Beauty Academy, and Stubby the Helicopter from the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center.
On Saturday, visitors can enjoy music by the Penncrest High School Pep Band and live shows with owls and birds of prey by Baywings Falconry. The fun continues on Sunday with dance performances by Joan’s Dance Studio and a Halloween magic show by Happy the Clown. Various games, a food court and more round out these fun-filled days.
“This is one of our favorite events of the year,” said Rick Colbert, Executive Director at Tyler. “We love to provide a place for our community to have a safe and enjoyable day outside where they can delight in nature’s beautiful autumn setting while participating in some really entertaining activities.”
All of the proceeds raised during Pumpkin Days go toward Tyler Arboretum’s general operating budget, thus making it possible to continue providing quality programs and classes while maintaining over 650 acres of natural areas.
Of course, this two-day festival is not possible without a generous amount of volunteer efforts.
“We depend on volunteers year-round, but Pumpkin Days is always a time when we need as much help as we can get,” said Melissa Hamblin, Volunteer Coordinator at Tyler. “We have need for anyone who is willing to help, regardless of skill or ability. We also sell baked goods at Pumpkin Days and we need people to donate their delicious baked goods for the sale.”
More details regarding volunteering and the bake sale are available at www.tylerarboretum.org/support-2/volunteer. Links are provided there to sign up for Pumpkin Days volunteer roles and time slots, or prospective volunteers can contact Melissa Hamblin at (610) 566-9134 ext. 205.
Free parking for Pumpkin Days is exclusively at the Penn State Brandywine campus, where visitors can catch the complimentary shuttle bus to and from Tyler Arboretum. Strollers are welcome on the shuttle. Parking at the Arboretum is reserved for handicapped parking.
Because this is a fundraising event, no free guest passes will be accepted on October 19-20. Entry fees are $10 for non-member adults, $7 for non-member children, $4 for member adults, $2 for non-member children and all children under three years old are free. Some activities require tickets. Tickets and ticket packages will be available for purchase on site during Pumpkin Days.

C-SPAN broadcasts talk on Battle of Brandywine
on Sunday by Chester County author Bruce Mowday
at historic Fraunces Tavern® Museum
Show will be aired at 8:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.
NEW YORK CITY _ C-SPAN on Sunday has scheduled to broadcast the talk given by Chester County author Bruce Mowday on his book on the Battle of Brandywine given at the historic Fraunces Tavern® Museum.
Jennifer Patton, director of Education & Public Programs at Fraunces Tavern® Museum said she received notification from C-SPAN that the shows will be aired at 8:30 a.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Mowday’s presentation on August 15, 2013, at the Fraunces Tavern was taped by C-SPAN, a private, nonprofit cable television network created in 1979 as a public service to broadcast federal government and public affairs programming.
Mowday authored the book September 11, 1777: Washington’s Defeat at Brandywine Dooms Philadelphia, published by White Mane Books of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. The book took Mowday six years to research, write and be published. Included in Mowday’s research was time in London and major repositories of information on the Brandywine battle in the United States.
“Fraunces Tavern Museum is a survivor of the early days of New York City. It was built in 1719 as an elegant residence for the merchant Stephan Delancey and his family. In 1762, the home was purchased by tavern-keeper Samuel Fraunces, who turned it into one of the most popular taverns of the day. Though it is best known as the site where Washington gave his farewell address to the officers of the Continental Army, in 1783, the tavern also played a significant role in pre-Revolutionary activities. After the war, when New York was the nation’s first capital, the tavern was rented to the new government to house the offices of the Departments of War, Treasury and Foreign Affairs,” according to museum information.
September 11, 1777: Washington’s Defeat Dooms Philadelphia deals with a number of subjects that have become controversial and the book debunks a number of legends, including ones involving the American Flag, future Supreme Court Justice John Marshall and British officer Patrick Ferguson.
The book is richly illustrated and contains Howard Pyle’s Nation Makers on the front cover through the permission of the Brandywine River Museum; a painting of the Battle of Brandywine by noted artist Adrian Martinez; original maps and a series of photographs in the collection of the Chester County Historical Society of the battlefield taken in the 1800s.
Brandywine was the largest land battle of the American Revolution and was Washington’s main defense of Philadelphia. The defeat led the long winter at Valley Forge.
Mowday has authored 15 books on history, sports, true crime and business. His latest books include Life With Flavor, a look at the life of Jim Herr and Herr Foods, Why The Hall Not, a look at Richie Ashburn’s road to the Hall of Fame, and Jailing The Johnston Gang: Bringing Serial Murderers To Justice, the story behind the killings of at least 10 persons and the breakup of one of the largest burglary rings stealing tractors and cars in the United States. A movie, At Close Range with Sean Penn, loosely used the facts of the story/
For information on all of Mowday’s books, see www.mowday.com.
