Personal stories of brain rehabilitation
Oct 5 @ 13:00 – 14:00

I would like to spread the word about my client, Jim Moore.  He and I will be speaking at the Unionville Community Fair this weekend, Saturday at 1:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm.  We will be in the Wellness tent and will stay after the presentation to answer questions.  A brief overview:  I'll talk about my car accident and Traumatic Brain Injury diagnosis, I'll talk about how Jim and I met, then Jim will share about having a stroke three years ago at age 56, having diabetes for years, and trying to recover from all of this.

Having a stroke takes away confidence so he's been in "hiding" for three years.  Part of what I am working on with him is getting him out of the house to share his story.  We've already done a live radio interview, WCHE, which is on my website.  Having him speak at the Fair shocked his wife - she didn't think he'd do it.  Now, let's see if he'll speak to WIB.

Jim and I have said.....our goal is to touch one person, have just one person change their life so they don't have to go through what he is going through.

Grape Picking – Galer Estate
Oct 6 @ 09:00 – 20:00

It's that time of year again! Throughout the month of October, we will be harvesting our red grapes. This is a fun opportunity for our Galer Estate family and friends to join in on the fun of winemaking!

Decisions about picking grapes are very important and often made on very short notice, so we are giving our favorite people a heads up now with a few instructions. At the time when the decision is made the grapes will be picked, we will be sending out an email with a link to a Signup Genius. When you receive that email, simply sign yourself up in a time slot that works for you and we will see you then!  Look for more volunteer emails throughout the month. There are many more to come!

Please click the link to signup for Sunday October 6th http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040E4BADA628AB9-volunteers

We have divided the days into two hour time slots. Please feel free to sign up for more than one slot.

Remember: this is a messy job! Wear work clothes and close-toed shoes. More details can be found on the Signup Genius information page.

Thank you for your continued support and helping make our dreams a reality.

Cheers to you all and Happy Harvest!

Copeland String Quartet
Oct 6 @ 15:00 – 16:00

The Hadley Memorial Fund is pleased to present a free concert by the Copeland String Quartet on Sunday, October 6, at 3:00 p.m. at Lower  Brandywine Presbyterian Church. Members of the quartet are Eliezer Gutman, violin, Thomas Jackson, violin, Nina Cottman, viola, and Mark Ward, cello. All play with many local symphonies in the area. They will be playing works by Mendelssohn and Dvořák.

First formed in 2003 because of their shared passion for the repertoire for the string quartet, they played their first concert at the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington, Delaware as part of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra's Champagne Chamber Series.  Their debut piece was the Brahms String Quartet No. 1.  Their next concert was at Westminster Presbyterian Church.  More concerts followed as part of the Delaware Symphony Chamber Series.   The quartet was asked to play a concert at the Church of the Holy City in Wilmington, Delaware to celebrate its 150th anniversary. Following that concert, the church, with its heavenly acoustics for chamber music, became home for a series of four yearly free concerts. The series is made possible by the sponsorship of art patron Tatiana Copeland. To thank Mrs. Copeland for her enthusiastic support, the quartet called themselves the Copeland String Quartet.  The quartet is particularly pleased to have a sponsored series, now in its fourth season, at the Church of the Holy City, in Wilmington, Delaware.

The Copeland String Quartet has enjoyed playing chamber concerts in many locations. They have also enjoyed invitations to play at nearby Universities, Colleges, and at several local fundraising events, including the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation Gala, Wilmington First Night and a Meals on Wheels fundraiser at ING Headquarters.

All Hadley programs are free and open to the public.  The church is handicalpped accessible.  For more information please contact : www.Hadleyfund.org, or 610-444-1855.

Taming of the Fox – free lecture from Hadley Memorial Fund
Oct 7 @ 19:45 – 20:45

The Hadley Memorial Fund is pleased to present a free lecture, The Taming of the Fox, by Dr. Gregory Acland on Friday, October 25, 8 p.m., at the Unionville High School, 750 Unionville Road, (north of Kennett Square on Route 82), Kennett Square, PA 19348

Many of us knew Dr. Acland when he was involved with the Boy Scouts in Unionville.  What we didn't know was he is a veterinary researcher who has worked extensively with the world's only population of domesticated foxes.  For over fifty years, these have been selectively bred for tameness at a fur farm in Novisibirsk, Russia, resulting in foxes which behave very much like domestic dogs.

Dr. Acland can speak about the history of this unique experiment and his involvement with it, what we have learned from it about the nature and process of domestication, and the possible future prospects of the domesticated foxes themselves.  He has dramatic video footage of the foxes interacting with humans, and is both clear and enthusiastic when presenting science to lay audiences.

All Hadley programs are free and open to the public.  For more information please contact: www.Hadleyfund.org, or 610-444-1855.

Paul Scarborough is a lover of nature with a sharp eye for the unusual … a poet on canvas that depicts the true character of the countryside – rustic barns and resident wildlife indigenous to the Pennsylvania counties of Chester and Delaware, Rehoboth Beach and fishing haunts he revisits on the Delaware Bay.

If success is measured by different yardsticks, Scarborough’s artistic achievements have made him a respected name in the art community.  Represented by Chadds Ford Gallery, since 1976, exhibiting widely on the East Coast in one-man and group exhibits, his work is found in many public and private collections here and abroad.

His permanent original art acquisitions can be seen locally at educational, hospital andcorporate collections of PNC Bank, Wilmington Trust Co., Blue Cross of Delaware and the parent company of Benjamin

American Moderns – O’Keeffe to Rockwell – Opens
Oct 12 @ 10:00 – 16:00

Between 1910 and 1960, American society underwent tumultuous and far-reaching transformations. The United States emerged as an international power of economic, industrial, and military might, while also experiencing two world wars and the Great Depression. American Moderns, 1910-1960: From O'Keeffe to Rockwell, on view at the Delaware Art Museum from October 12, 2013 through January 5, 2014, features 57 paintings and sculptures that highlight the changes in American art and culture during this fascinating half-century.This major traveling exhibition, drawn from the Brooklyn Museum's renowned American art collection, features works of art produced by leading artists of the day, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Milton Avery, Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Rockwell Kent, Joseph Stella, Elie Nadelman, and Norman Rockwell. Complementing the Delaware Art Museum's own significant holdings of 20th-century American art and illustration, American Moderns exemplifies the unique contributions to modern culture by visual artists as they looked for new ways to make their work relevant in a changing world. The range of works in this exhibition provide the opportunity to investigate a wide array of artistic styles, such as Cubism, Synchromism, Precisionism, Expressionism, and Social Realism, along with themes that explore images of modern structures, Americana, and stylized renditions of landscapes and still-life arrangements. Visitors will enjoy a cast of engaging characters including a tattoo artist, a confidence man, boxers, and independent women.

"This exhibition presents a broad and inclusive view of modern art in the United States, expanding the discussion of what is considered modern," explains Delaware Art Museum's Heather Campbell Coyle, Curator of American Art."The paintings and sculptures range in style from meticulously realist to entirely abstract, from romantic to mechanical, from nostalgic to avant-garde."

Along with the exhibition, the Museum will host a variety of events and programs including an exclusive Members Preview, gallery talks, a full-day symposium, and a free family day.
