Femfolio opens at Delaware Art Museum
Sep 14 @ 10:00 – 16:00
The Delaware Art Museum presents Femfolio, on view from September 14, 2013 through January 12, 2014. Published by the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers in 2006-2007, this exhibition assembles 20 women artists important to the feminist art movement of the 1970s.Femfolio traces a significant and vibrant moment in the history of contemporary American art and includes prints by Eleanor Antin, Joyce Kozloff, Faith Ringgold, Miriam Shapiro, Carolee Schneemann, Nancy Spero, June Wayne, and Martha Wilson, among others.

Beginning in the late 1960s, identity became a unifying force throughout American culture. Special interest groups were founded based on race and gender, while communities united in political activism protested social injustice at home and the Vietnam War abroad. Feminist art came to maturity in this atmosphere, and with it came the foundation of women-only collectives, galleries, programs, and publications.

The feminist practice was explored through varied approaches and diverse media including works on paper, painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and video. While many artists focused on the female body as subject and material, others explored political protest, traditional gender roles of mother or caregiver, ancient images of women, mythology, spirituality, and nature.

"Women artists were exploring their personal identities during a time of incredible change," explains Delaware Art Museum's Margaret Winslow, Associate Curator for Contemporary Art. "Femfolio reveals that there is no single female sensibility but a multitude of responses."

For more information or to request images, contact Jessica Jenkins, Manager of Marketing & Public Relations, at [email protected] or 302-351-8558.

Femfolio was donated to the Delaware Art Museum by Dr. Danielle Rice in 2010.

This exhibition is made possible, in part, by grants from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

2013 Plantation Field international competition

features Olympic team members

from the United States and Europe

and adds activities for all family members

Downton Abbey is theme of September 20-22 happening in Unionville

UNIONVILLE _ Members of the United States Olympic Equestrian team, including Boyd Martin and Phillip Dutton of Chester County, will return to participate in the sixth annual three-day Plantation Field International Horse Trials and Country Fair. Two Olympic members from Sweden are also participating.

The three days of Eventing competition, known as the triathlon of the horse world, will take place at picturesque Plantation Field , just outside of Unionville. On Friday, September 20, the Dressage phase will be held and admission is free. The parking fee for the Saturday, September 21 show jumping day  and Sunday, September 22 Cross Country Day  will be $20. The fee includes admission to the grounds for everyone in the car and a program.

Plantation Field is located at 387 Green Valley Road, Unionville. Competition each day will take place from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with main events beginning late morning each day. The shops and country fair operation begins at 9:00 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Cheshire Land Preservation Fund, The Barn at Spring Brook Farm, and the Chester County Food Bank.

Besides the Eventing competition and enjoying the spectacular view, spectators will be treated to a country fair. “This is a family-friendly event,” said Katie Walker of Plantation Field’s executive committee. “There will be activities for children, food and shops with equestrian themes.  Plantation Field is the perfect venue to spend time with the family.”

Last year a tailgating competition was added and this year the theme will be Downton Abbey after the PBS show from England. “Downton Abbey is widely popular and everyone loves the period costumes and traditions depicted on the show. This is a perfect theme for Plantation Field,” Walker said. “Tailgating is a wonderful tradition. It’s part of the festive atmosphere. We are going to enlist a guest judge and prizes will be awarded. Space is limited, so those interested should contact us.”

Other events include a Chester County craftsmen exhibition, celebrity bareback jumping, and a wine bistro and beer garden all day Saturday and Sunday. Sunday is an exciting day with Cross Country riding, tailgating, and at the lunch break, an antique carriage parade followed by the celebrity bareback jumping contest , where riders jump over a 6 foot wall without a saddle.   New this year on the grounds is a wine bistro and beer garden all day Saturday and Sunday.

Eventing is comprised of three varied and challenging phases of competition, including dressage, cross-country jumping and show jumping. Dressage consists of an exact sequence of movements ridden in an enclosed area. Judging is based on balance, rhythm, suppleness and obedience of the horse and harmony with the rider. Cross country includes jumping of fences over a three-mile course and requires both horse and rider to be in excellent physical condition. Show jumping tests the technical jumping skills of the horse and rider.

“Plantation Field is the perfect setting for the Eventing competition,” Walker said. “Chester County is a Mecca for all types of equestrian pursuits. Championship horses have been bred and trained in the county and some of the top riders in all disciplines of riding and jumping have called Chester County home.

Walker added, “We’re expecting large crowds this year. Last year we had more than 4,000 people for the three days of events.”

FRIDAY FOOD PAIRING WITH COUNTRY BUTCHER

OPEN 4-9pm every Friday, with specially selected wine and food pairings from 5-7pm designed by the famous cheesemonger of the Country Butcher of Kennett Square. Durng this time only, our selected wine will be offered at 5$ a glass, with a 10% bottle discount.

Friday September 13th- cheese & charcuterrie with Sauvignon Blanc 2012

(This the first release of our Sauvignon Blanc!)

This is what renown food and wine critic Craig LaBan wrote about our Rosé 2012 in the Philadelphia Inquirer:

"My newest infatuation, though, is the dry rosé from Galer Estate, a fledgling winery from Brad and Lele Galer. Their vines abutting Longwood Gardens were just planted in 2005, and a street sign just went up last month. But winemaker Catrina North is already a name worth remembering. For this rosé, she's collected the vineyard's various red grapes - mostly cabernet franc, with merlot, spicy petit verdot, and cab sauvignon - and vinted them pale-pink and bone-dry. As minerally complex as a balanced blush from the south of France, this may be as close as we get to a taste of Provence on the Brandywine."

Kennett Symphony begins Conductor Search Season with
Opening Night Spectacular

Saturday, September 21, 2013

7pm: Pre-concert chat with Conductor Candidate Hall  •  8pm: Concert
Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre, West Chester University

The Kennett Symphony of Chester County begins its 2013 – 2014 Conductor Search Season with Opening Night Spectacular, under the direction of Conductor Candidate Michael Hall, featuring pianist Igor Resnianski. Entering its 73rd season, a pre-concert chat with Conductor Candidate Hall will be presented at 7:00 pm followed by the concert at 8:00 pm.  Both will be held at West Chester University’s Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre on Saturday, September 21, 2013.

Beginning the program is Kodály’s Intermezzo from Háry János Suite, followed by Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor featuring Igor Resnianski on piano.  Finishing the program is Dvořák’s grand Symphony No. 9 in E minor From the New World.

The 19th century was an era of strong nationalist movements.  Each composer in this concert was inspired by music from their native countries.  Kodály’s suite was inspired by the folk music of Hungary, Grieg’s concerto is linked to his Norwegian roots, and Dvořák’s symphony reflects both the folk influences of his Czech culture and the sounds and characteristics of Native American melodies and plantation songs.

Hailed as having “talent to burn” by the Winnipeg Free Press, Michael Hall’s career includes guest appearances with some of the finest orchestras in North America, including the Houston Symphony, Toronto Symphony and Vancouver Symphony, among others. In Central America, Hall has worked with the Orquesta Sinfionica Nacional de Costa Rica. He has a special relationship with the Tucson Symphony, where he has been a frequent guest conductor over the past eight seasons. Hall recently concluded his 5th successful season as Music Director of the Southwest Florida Symphony. His drive for artistic excellence, innovative thematic programming, and collaborations with celebrated guest artists resulted in unprecedented artistic growth, audience praise, and enthusiastic reviews. Before being appointed Music Director of the Southwest Florida Symphony, Hall held the position of Associate Conductor with the Pacific Symphony in California where he developed innovative Family Concerts based on his own original scripts. Hall’s success in California led to his initial three year position being extended to an unprecedented six year tenure. Hall holds a Master’s degree in conducting from the University of Michigan, studying with renowned conducting pedagogue Gustav Meier, and a DipRAM from the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he worked with Sir Colin Davis. While studying in England, Hall also held the position of Assistant conductor of the Havant Symphony Orchestra in the UK. Hall was a finalist in the 2003 International Conducting Competition in Besançon France, and was awarded Third Prize in the 2004 Cadaques Orchestra International Conducting Competition in Spain.

A Steinway artist, Igor Resnianski is a prize winner of many international piano competitions including the First Prize of the New Orleans International Piano Competition, the Bronze Medal of the International World Piano Competition, Cincinnati, Ohio, the Bronze Medal of the Nena Wideman International Piano Competition, Shreveport, Louisiana, and the Second Prize of the All Russian Piano Competition Sodrujestvo. He has performed with numerous orchestras including Forth Worth Symphony, New Orleans Symphony and Acadiana Symphony. Dr. Resnianski teaches at West Chester University and the Nelly Berman School of Music. In spring 2012, Dr. Resnianski was named “Music Teacher of the Year” by the Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association.

West Chester University’s Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre is located at the Swope Music Building at the intersection of S. High Street and East Campus Drive. The entrance is located on the parking lot side of the building (M-Lot). The street address is 817 S. High Street, West Chester, PA 19383.

Single ticket prices are $35 in advance, $40 at the door, students are $5. Subscriptions are available featuring a variety of packages and prices as well as group discounts. Free parking. For complete information visit www.kennettsymphony.org or call the Kennett Symphony at 610 444 6363.
