The annual Barclay Friends' Festival of Gardens is a West Chester garden tour held each September that features the lovely gardens of the residents of West Chester Borough. During the tour, local artists can be found working in many of the gardens, and following the tour there is a plant sale at Barclay Friends. The Festival of Gardens benefits the Horticultural Therapy program and is supported by members of the West Chester community who help plan and host the annual event in different sections of the Borough of West Chester each year. A committee of dedicated volunteers including former board members, members of the community, Barclay Friends’ family members, and staff help to make this yearly event a resounding success. We thank all of our volunteers, garden owners, artists, sponsors, attendees, and committee members for their support of Barclay Friends’ Horticultural Program through their participation in our annual Barclay Friends' Festival of Gardens.

There is also a Mushroom Walk/Run, an Antique and Classic Car Show, entertainment for children, the Soup and Wine Fest, the Painted Mushroom Silent Auction, and the Old Fashioned Carnival.
The Amateur Mushroom Cook-off on Saturday features appetizers this year instead of soup!

Brandywine Battlefield is holding its annual Sept. 11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sept. 11 at the park site. It begins at 6 and lasts approximately 1/2 hour. Gen. George Washington will be portrayed by Carl Closs who has much experience in this, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of Washington and will be available to answer questions. Piper. John Sagrati is a member of the Ceol Neamh Pipe Band, a competition pipe band in Lancaster, PA. will provide appropriate music. Bro. David Schlatter will bring his Bells of Remembrance from an appearance in New York City the same day. Br. Schlatter is with the Franciscans in Silver Spring, MD, and does this every year also. The Brandywine Baptist Church will be there to support the singing of several patriotic songs. There will be a small musket firing in conclusion.

Proceeds from the Blue Rocks Baseball Benefit will be awarded to Friends of Brandywine Battlefield. A matching grant will be awarded by the Phyllis Recca Foundation.

| The Delaware Art Museum presents Femfolio, on view from September 14, 2013 through January 12, 2014. Published by the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers in 2006-2007, this exhibition assembles 20 women artists important to the feminist art movement of the 1970s.Femfolio traces a significant and vibrant moment in the history of contemporary American art and includes prints by Eleanor Antin, Joyce Kozloff, Faith Ringgold, Miriam Shapiro, Carolee Schneemann, Nancy Spero, June Wayne, and Martha Wilson, among others.
Beginning in the late 1960s, identity became a unifying force throughout American culture. Special interest groups were founded based on race and gender, while communities united in political activism protested social injustice at home and the Vietnam War abroad. Feminist art came to maturity in this atmosphere, and with it came the foundation of women-only collectives, galleries, programs, and publications. The feminist practice was explored through varied approaches and diverse media including works on paper, painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and video. While many artists focused on the female body as subject and material, others explored political protest, traditional gender roles of mother or caregiver, ancient images of women, mythology, spirituality, and nature. "Women artists were exploring their personal identities during a time of incredible change," explains Delaware Art Museum's Margaret Winslow, Associate Curator for Contemporary Art. "Femfolio reveals that there is no single female sensibility but a multitude of responses." Hagley Car Show
Enjoy more than 500 antique and restored cars that date from the early 1900s-1980s. This year’s special feature is American manufacturers’ high performance cars. The show features vehicle parades, motoring music, video and go-kart racing, and a festival food court. Activities are on Hagley’s upper property. Wristbands to the show will be offered in advance at the Hagley Store or www.hagley.org from August 15 through September 12 (online) or September 13 (store). Pre-event wristbands are $8 adults and $4 children six through fourteen. Wristbands purchased at the Car Show cost $10 for adults and $5 for children six through fourteen. Admission is free for Hagley members and children five and under. The event will be held rain or shine.
