Calling all families! See the Brandywine River Museum Railroad before it chugs away for another year and enjoy special train-themed activities. Families may challenge their skills of observation by finding fun details in the train layout and exploring the special exhibition, Pop-Up! Illustration in 3-D. Next, all are invited to create their own train "pop-up" art.

The Museum is open daily, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except Christmas Day and until 6 p.m. December 26-30. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for students and free for members and children under 6.

On November 14, 2012, at 6:30pm the Radley Run Country Club held our 4^th Historic Seminar.  This annual event was open to the public.

The event this year, “Muskets and Petticoats”, included little known facts about the relationship between General George Washington and the Marques de Lafayette.  To Washington, Lafayette became the son he never had and to Lafayette, Washington became the father he never knew.  The evening also focused on the often overlooked, yet important, role women played in the American Revolution.  Over 100 people attended this exciting event covering events from the Battle of the Brandywine on September 11, 1777 through the winter at Valley Forge.

As always the proceeds from the event benefit charities.  The beneficiaries this year are all related to the topic and include the Lafayette College Library, the Chester County Historical Society, and Friends of Valley Forge Park.

On Wednesday, January 9^th at 5:30 the charities will attend a meeting where their checks will be presented from the proceeds of the event.

The Magic Pencil of the Amazing F.O.C. Darley

January 19 - March 10, 2013

More than 60 works by F.O.C. Darley, whose talent in book and magazine illustrations made him the most popular illustrator of his day, will be on view at the Brandywine River Museum from January 19 through March 10, 2013.

Darley received praise for his "magic pencil," immortalizing the fictional characters created by the most famous authors of his day, including Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper. He was also renowned for his drawings and prints related to the Revolutionary War, Civil War and the American frontier.

"Darley is a pivotal figure in the growth of illustration in early America," said Audrey Lewis, associate curator. "His career launched just as the market for book and magazine illustration was exploding. So great was the demand for Darley's work that new books were promoted as 'illustrated by Darley.' He also was important to the tradition of illustration as it developed in the Brandywine Valley through Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth."

A self-taught artist, Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1888) was born in Philadelphia. As a young man he was part of a lively arts scene that included Edgar Allan Poe, who in 1843 chose Darley-the only illustrator Poe ever hand-picked-to illustrate his short story "The Gold Bug." Darley moved to New York City in 1848, and his work began to appear in magazines such as Harper's Weekly and in books by various publishers. He illustrated works by popular authors of the day, such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Clement C. Moore and Harriet Beecher Stowe (as well as those mentioned above). Darley created lively drawings for all of Washington Irving's major novels, including Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Darley married in 1859 and moved to Claymont, Delaware, where he worked until his death in 1888 in his home-studio while finishing a portfolio of Dickens' character sketches. His Victorian mansion, now known as the Darley House, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Magic Pencil of the Amazing F.O.C. Darley features works from the Brandywine River Museum's rich permanent collection, rarely seen prints on loan from the Darley Society, and several important works on loan from private collectors. The exhibition also includes bank notes and bonds illustrated by Darley, a sketch book from his European tour, drawings for Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, James Fenimore Cooper's The Pioneers and Sylvester Judd's Margaret, as well as examples of his important historical drawings and more.

The Brandywine River Museum is located on U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, PA.  The museum is open daily, except Christmas Day, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults; $8 for seniors, $6 for students and children ages 6 to 12; and free for members and children under six.  Museum admission is free on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to noon from January 13 through November 24 (except during the Antiques Show on Memorial Day weekend). The Hadley Memorial Fund presents Astral Harp Productions, an exciting multimedia event combining amazing astro-photography with stellar harp playing! This husband and wife team are experts in their fields and are guaranteed to educate and entertain their audiences. This free program will be Friday,

Kevin will expound on the wonders of the universe thru visual images of space using his own photography in addition to Hubble Space Telescope images and videos. Kevin is a planetarium operator/lecturer at the North Museum in Lancaster, PA. His astrophotography has been seen on BBC's "Sky at Night", MSNBC and Space Weather websites.

Janet has arranged and composed harp music to enhance the experience with such hits as "Moondance", "Stairway to Heaven" and "What a Wonderful World.  Janet is a nationally awarded harpist whose playing has been described as, "poetry in motion". She is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, principal harpist with two professional orchestras, directs the Brandywine Harp Orchestra and is much sought after for concerts, conferences and teaching.  She played for the Hadley fund in the 17th season when she was a Curtis student.
