Media Barracks
• State police said Matthew Costa, 47, of Glen Mills, was arrested for DUI on July 4. The report said police stopped the vehicle after observing it was speeding on Conchester Highway at approximately 1 a.m. The vehicle was traveling 89 mph in a posted 45 mph zone and it was determined that Costa was driving under the influence, according to the report.
• A person identified only as Turner was arrested on shoplifting charges on July 11. According to the police report, an asset protection member at the Target store in Concord Township was able to detain Turner until police arrived, and the employee also recognized him as the person who committed a retail theft at the same store two days earlier. The incident remains under investigation.
• Police arrested a 26-year-old Bensalem man for shoplifting at Wegmans on July 13. The suspect, not named in the report, is accused of taking $434 worth of merchandise.
Avondale Barracks
• Police said they arrested a 36-year-old man from West Grove on shoplifting charges. The suspect, not named in the report, is accused of stealing from the East Marlborough Township Walmart on July 9. The report made no mention of what was taken.
• A 66-year-old man from Oxford was arrested for DUI following a July 6 traffic stop at a sobriety checkpoint near Routes 1 and 52. The driver, not named in the report, showed signs of impairment and field sobriety tests also showed impairment.
• Police arrested a 28-year-old West Chester man on drug possession charges following a traffic stop on Church Road in West Marlborough Township on July 10. The suspect’s name was not mentioned. According to the report, police said they made the traffic stop after observing moving violations on Church Road near Newark Road and, after making contact with the driver, troopers detected the smell of marijuana. The driver gave police permission to search the vehicle and police found the marijuana and paraphernalia.
• Someone broke into two cars parked on Locust Grave Road in Pocopson Township and stole a purse from each car. The incident happened on July 8. Police are investigating.
• Emma S. Maloney, 21, of West Chester, was cited for her involvement in a two-vehicle crash on Pocopson Road in Pennsbury Township on June 21, police said. According to the report, Maloney was traveling east on Chandler Road and the second vehicle was going north on Pocopson Road. Police said Maloney didn’t properly clear a posted stop sign causing the second vehicle to strike her car in the intersection. No injuries were reported.
• Police from the Avondale barracks are investigating a reported case of identity theft in Pennsbury Township. The complainant reportedly told police that a $30,000 car loan had been taken out in his name.
Kennett Square Police Department
• Borough police said Damian Kelly, 56, of Kennett Square was arrested and charged with terrorist threats, DUI, and other related traffic offenses after the 2022 Ram he was driving was stopped for failing to maintain its lane of travel. The incident occurred on July 3, at approximately 8:36 p.m., in the 600 block of E. Cypress Street. Upon making contact with Kelly, who was uncooperative, the report said, police observed indicators suggesting intoxication. He was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and refused a chemical test of his breath. Police said Kelly was irate, confrontational, and verbally abusive the entire time he was in police custody.
• Andres Garcia-Popoca, 59, was arrested and charged with DUI and related traffic offenses after officers were dispatched to a hit-and-run accident, a report said. The incident occurred on July 1, at approximately 5:04 p.m., in the 500 block of S. Walnut Street. Upon making contact with the Garcia-Popoca, police said they observed indicators suggesting intoxication, and field sobriety tests showed impairment. He was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and submitted to a chemical test of his breath, resulting in a blood alcohol level of 0.160 percent. He was processed and later released pending issuance of a summons.
