AccuWeather is forecasting a winter storm watch from 1 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6 to 1 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7. An estimated 3-6 inches of snow is predicted for the greater Chadds Ford to Kennett Square area with temperatures hovering around the freezing point.

The National Weather Service out of Mt. Holly, N.J. is also calling for a winter storm watch and is reporting pretty much the same conditions but is saying most of the snowfall will come after 4 a.m. on Monday. About an inch of snow is predicted during the overnight hours but, according to the Weather Service,  daytime snowfall on Monday will add another 2-4 inches. Accumulation will affect all of Southeastern Pennsylvania and portions of southern New Jersey and into Delaware, NWS is reporting.

It could be worse. Delaware and parts of Maryland could see 5 to 9 inches, and lake effect snow is expected to cover the Lake Erie region with up to 5  feet of the white stuff.

PennDOT is gearing up for the storm. Department crews will be pretreating roadways, and PennDOT is advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. It will also set speed and vehicle restrictions on certain roads.

For those who must travel, PennDOT is offering the following advice:

• Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions.
• Turn on your headlights. If caught in a snow squall, turn on your hazard lights.
• Stay in your lane and increase your following distance.
• Stay alert, keep looking as far ahead as possible, and be patient.
• Do not drive distracted; your full attention is required.
• Use your defroster and wipers
• Keep windows and mirrors free of snow and ice.
• During whiteouts, come to a complete stop only when you can safely pull off the roadway.
• Do not stop in the flow of traffic since this could cause a chain-reaction collision.
• Do not pass a vehicle moving slowly or speed up to get away from a vehicle that is following too closely.
• And, as always, buckle up and never drive impaired.
