It’s a festival in the garden or perhaps Fiesta en el Jardín on Sunday, Oct. 12 at Mt. Cuba Center. Spend an autumn afternoon in the gardens celebrating Mexican culture, as Mt. Cuba partners with the Hispanic American Association of Delaware for an early celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Come wearing your best sugar skull makeup and learn about the significance of monarch butterflies. Free with general admission to the gardens and for members. Go here for ticketing information.

Opening at the Brandywine Museum of Art this fall, The Crafted World of Wharton Esherick will explore the artistic legacy of Wharton Esherick (1887-1970), one of the most creative and interdisciplinary figures of twentieth-century American art, craft, and design. Co-organized by the Brandywine and the Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM), this major exhibition will detail the artist’s career from his early woodcut illustrations for books by the avant-garde literati to his revolutionary reimagining of furniture forms as organic sculpture. The Crafted World features more than 70 works by the artist. The exhibit runs from Oct. 13 to Jan. 19.

Learn about low back pain at Rachel Kohl Library on Oct. 15.

It’s believed that 40 percent of people seeking care for low back pain will not receive treatment of known effectiveness. Meanwhile, the United States spends $100 billion every year just for low back pain. Dr. Michael Fernandes of Kinetic Physical Therapy will present a program on lower back pain at the Rachel Kohl Community Library on Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to noon. Learn how to improve the quality of life when facing low back pain. The seminar will include demonstrations for participants on common exercises for low back pain. Registration is encouraged.

On Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m., Newlin Grist Mill’s Executive Director Tony Shahan, will present Protecting the Heart of Newlin Grist Mill: Restoration of a Historic Water System. The presentation will be held in the Log Cabin at Newlin Grist Mill as part of their Newlin Series and is free to attend. Seating is limited, so pre-registration is recommended by emailing info@newlingristmill.org or calling the site at 610-459-2359. This talk will also be taking place during one of the site’s weekly Happy Hour events with Deer Creek Malthouse, and attendees are encouraged to come out starting at 5 p.m. to enjoy beverages (including non-alcoholic options) by the stream before the program. The grist mill is located at the intersection of Routeb1 and Cheyney Road.

A fall festival with three fire companies on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Kennett Regional Fire Department, made up of Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company, Longwood Fire Company, and Kennett Fire Company, will host their first-ever joint Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Po-Mar-Lin Fire Coat 36 Firehouse Drive. Live music will feature Demitri Grivas, food and canned cocktails by Saloon 151, apple cider and apple cider donuts from Northbrook Marketplace, coffee and treats from Farmer & Co, and family activities such as pumpkin painting, an Autumn Sensory Bin, and crafts provided by the Kennett Library. There will also feature several high-ticket raffle items donated by local businesses, professional sports teams, and others. All proceeds will benefit the regional department as a whole. All three fire companies will be present to answer any questions from the community and showcase each company’s specialties. The event is free to attend.
