5-year-old drowns in pond

A 5-year-old autistic boy drowned in a pond in Kennett Township on Monday afternoon, April 29.

“The detective from the Kennett Township Police Department and the Chester County Detectives are investigating the facts and circumstances that led to the boy’s death,” according to a press release.

Kennett Township Police said they would not release the boy’s name until “all next-of-kin notifications have been made.”

The boy was reported missing Monday afternoon from the 600 block of Chandler Mill Road and was later found face down in a neighbor’s pond. Police were dispatched at 2:46 p.m. and checked the house, neighborhood, and nearby woods, according to the release, and also requested assistance from Kennett and Longwood fire companies, Longwood EMS, and a drone from the Southern Chester County Regional Police.

“Before the requested backup arrived, Kennett Township found the missing boy face down in a pond on a neighbor’s property,” the police said in the release. “Officers dove into the pond, removed the child, and immediately began CPR until the arrival of Longwood Fire and EMS. Life-saving measures continued as the boy was transported to (Nemours Children’s) Hospital. Despite all additional efforts, the child was pronounced dead at the hospital.”
