Taxes steady in Birmingham

Birmingham Township supervisors passed the 2024 budget Monday night and local property tax rates will remain at 1.6 mils. That millage rate has held steady since 2010. (A mil is a tax of $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value.)

Anticipated revenues for 2024 are $2.8 million, which includes a carryover of $1.48 million. Expenses for next year are expected to be $2.4 million.

In addition to passing the budget for next year, supervisors also entered into an agreement with the Borough of West Chester for fire service for the next five years. Those services involve the West Chester Fire Department, which is comprised of three fire companies — Fame Fire Co., First West Chester Fire Co., and Goodwill Fire Co. They’ll provide service for the northern part of the township, the area north of Route 926. (Concordville Fire Co. will handle calls on the south side.)

According to solicitor Kristen Camp, the yearly fees for that service will start at just less than $35,000 for 2024, and gradually slide up to $39,000 in 2028. She added that the agreement also allows the participating municipalities to opt-out.

Police Chief Tom Nelling said the cost of the service is less than before. The reason, he said, is that the companies involved don’t have to buy expensive trucks during those next five years.

Other business

The board authorized advertising the 2024 Road Program with bids to be opened in February.

Supervisors agreed to retain the services of the Cohen Law Group to work on the renewal of the Verizon franchise in Birmingham.
