Pie times in Concord

The winners are, from left, Andrew Novasitis, Kiki Coll, and Laurie Harrison. Andrew took first place with his Bourbon chocolate chip pecan pie. Coll came in third with her, Harrison won in the best appearance category for her queen bee apple pie. Not pictured is Wesolowski, who came in second with her cherry pie.

Concord Township’s Parks and Recreation Committee provided some tasty fun Sunday with a pie-baking contest. There were 19 entries and people who wanted a slice with ice cream got some, as long as they made a donation to the Rachel Kohl Library.

Park and Recreation Chairman Dan Frattarelli helps set the presentation table before the judging began.

The pies were already baked so the June 11 contest at the township park was pretty much a matter of eating and judging. Judges included Rachel Kohl Library Executive Director Susan Sternberg, Concord Township Councilwoman Venita Deshmukh, and (full disclosure) this reporter who was pressed into service because of a communication glitch with the third scheduled judge.

Pies were judged on three criteria, appearance, taste, and skill level, the last being the one none of the judges had any clue how to judge. But after the requisite sugar overload from tasting 19 pies — including a chicken pot pie, the lone savory entry — the scores were tallied, and the winners announced.

Let’s eat. Members of the Concord Township Park and Recreation Committee serve pies baked for the contest.

Kiki Coll came in third place with her very blueberry pie; Lin Wesoloski and her cherry pie came in second; and Andrew Novasitis took first place with his Bourbon chocolate chip pecan pie. Lauri Harrison’s queen bee apple pie won for best appearance.

When asked how she thought things went, Park and Rec Special Events Coordinator Allison O’Donohue said the day went well.

“I couldn’t have asked for better,” she said.

Her colleague on the committee, Chairman Dan Frattarelli added, “And the presentation was beautiful.”
