• During a ceremony held Wednesday at The State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, Concord Township and the Newlin Grist Mill were presented with a Governor’s Award for Local Government Excellence in the Building Community Partnerships category for their important work in preserving the 18th Century Newlin Log House.
• Chester County’s Camp Cadet Golf Classic is scheduled for Monday, May 22, at the Kennett Country Club. Participants can win cash and a car while raising money for Camp Cadet. Camp Cadet is an overnight summer camp for kids ages 11-13 who live or attend school in Chester County. The program provides kids with an understanding of law enforcement activities, as well as comfort with the professionals who serve their communities. Go here to register. The cost is $165.
• Delaware County Symphony’s final concert of the season is entitled The Koussevitzky Connection. The first work on the program, Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, was initially recorded in 1945 by Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Next, our Youth Concerto Competition winner Sophia Nam will perform the Viola Concerto by British composer Sir William Walton. Written in 1929, it is recognized as one of the greatest compositions for viola and orchestra. The final piece is Symphony No. 2 by Howard Hanson. This symphony was commissioned by Koussevitzky for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1930. • Mt. Cuba Center is offering a class on wood burning on Wednesday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to noon. People can learn to make their own beautiful wood-burned artwork in this one-of-a-kind workshop. Discover different wood-burning techniques, compare how different types of wood burn, and explore your artistic side by creating various textures, shapes, and designs with a simple-to-use wood-burning pen.
