The Carve returns

D'Oh!

After a year off because of the COVID pandemic, The Great Pumpkin Carve returned to the Chadds Ford Historical Society’s pumpkin patch. More than 50 carvers armed with saws, drills, knives, and chisels did creative battle with the huge gourds. Some creations were simple while others were more complex and elaborate, but the idea was to have fun.

Patrick Cabry with what started out as the face of the wolfman.

“It feels amazing to be back,” said Sandi Johnson, the event manager. “People are really hungry for the energy.”

“And the carvers can once again show their creativity,” added CFHS President Randell Spackman. After a year where there was only a virtual carve, he said “We’re getting the machine turned back on again, people want to get out and have something to look forward to.”

Some of that creativity reflected traditional Halloween imagery. Others reflected contemporary, such as Julian Noble carving a functional QR code on his pumpkin. A QR code — or quick response code — is a barcode done as a grid that people can use to access websites through their phones. Noble said he could program what website the code accessed.

Crazy Eddie

A more traditional form came from Patrick Cabry who said he started carving the face of a wolfman but one that morphed into a face that was up for interpretation.

The QR Code by Julian Noble. Noble said it worked for some but not for others. Noble earned an honorable mention for best use of pumpkin.

In between was “Crazy Eddie,” a creation of the Anders Family of Phoenixville. Crazy Eddie was a head with a face and a bunch of leaves coming out of the head. And there was April Margera’s “Koo Koo Bird of Chadds Ford,” and a turtle by Heidi Brennan and friends.

There was also a haunted trail courtesy of Phyllis Recca and Gene Pisasale, raffle prizes, live music from Kenny & Friends, as well as a performance by “America’s Got Talent” contestant, Dylan Zangwill.

The carve, with pumpkins on display, food trucks and live music runs through Saturday night.

Road Report for Oct. 16 to Oct. 22

PennDOT has announced the following road projects, which are weather-dependent and could affect drivers in the greater Chadds Ford area during the week of Oct. 16 to Oct. 22. Motorists are urged to allow extra time if they are traveling through one of the construction zones. Work schedules are subject to change.

Pole replacement will cause daytime lane closures on Route 926 between Byrd Road and Brook Lane in East Marlborough Township from Oct. 18 to Nov. 30.

Utility construction will close New Street between Gay and Market streets in West Chester through Oct. 29 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Aerial maintenance will cause daytime lane shifts on Route 926 between Byrd and Newark roads in West Marlborough Township through Dec. 30.

Aerial maintenance will cause daytime lane shifts on Route 926 between Newark Road and West Baltimore Pike in West Marlborough Township through Dec. 30.

Traffic signal installation will cause daytime lane closures on Route 926 between Cedarcroft Road and Unicorn Lane in East Marlborough Township through Nov 26.

Utility construction will cause weekday lane closures on Gay Street between Church and New Streets in West Chester through Oct. 31.

Flagging for gas main installation will slow daytime traffic on Brintons Bridge Road between General Weedon Drive and Winturford Drive in Birmingham Township from Sept. 27 through Oct. 22.

Roadwork on Route 1 through Chadds Ford will continue to be a problem for the remainder of the year. Lane closures remain in place in both directions on Route 1 between Hoffman Mill Road and Fairville Road in Chadds Ford and Pennsbury townships, under a project to repair the Route 1 bridge over the Brandywine Creek. The right lane closures will remain in place 24/7 through mid-October. Once the right lanes reopen to traffic in mid-October, the left lane in both directions will close through late December to continue expansion dam replacement.

Work crews will also continue to prepare Route 1 Hoffman Mill Road and Route 202 for repaving. Cutting and patching will continue for several months but the actual repaving won’t begin until sometime in the spring.

Traffic signal installation will cause lane closures on Route 82 between Cedarcroft Road and Unicorn Lane through Nov. 26.

Storm damage has forced the closing of the Street Road Bridge over the White Clay Creek in West Marlborough Township. PennDOT is listing the closure as indefinite.

Storm damage also closed Embreeville Road Bridge over the West Branch over the Brandywine Creek in Newlin Township. That closure, too, is listed as indefinite.
