The left lane of southbound Route 1 across the bridge over the Brandywine Creek is closed for repairs.
Motorists traveling south on the bridge carrying U.S. 1 over the Brandywine Creek will experience a left lane closure between Creek Road and Fairville Road in Chadds Ford and Pennsbury townships, due to the deterioration of two structural support pedestals discovered during a recent bridge inspection, PennDOT announced today.
Motorists traveling south on U.S. 1 in this area are advised to allow extra time for travel because backups and delays may occur.
The U.S. 1 bridge was built in 1937 and reconstructed in 1990. The 86-foot long, 60-foot-wide structure carries approximately 27,668 vehicles a day. Prior to implementing this lane closure, trucks were restricted from traveling on the bridge’s southbound left lane.
PennDOT is finalizing the rehabilitation plan to replace the damaged pedestals and deteriorated deck joints on the southbound U.S. 1 structure. Construction is expected to start within the next few weeks. The work will be performed by Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., the general contractor.

The Brandywine River Museum of Art will reopen to the public on Sunday, June 20, with a new special exhibition, Ralston Crawford: Air & Space & War.
During its temporary closure, the Museum underwent several facility renovations to the second and third floors, including a complete refurbishment of the restrooms on the second floor — making them fully ADA accessible — as well as switching their current location with the Strawbridge Family Gallery, which will soon open to the public later this summer.

Opening into the museum’s central atrium, the reimagined gallery—complete with new state-of-the-art lighting — will improve circulation within the building, enhancing the visitor experience. Additionally, the museum’s other galleries have been refreshed with paint and rehung with a new selection of recent acquisitions and loans, as well as rarely seen works from the permanent collection.
On view through September 19, 2021, Ralston Crawford: Air & Space & War will explore U.S. aviation and military history through the art and personal experiences of the renowned American Modernist Ralston Crawford. Organized by the Vilcek Foundation, in collaboration with the Brandywine, this focused exhibition will feature an extensive collection of nearly 80 works by the artist, including drawings, photographs, paintings and lithographs from the 1940s that narrate his involvement with aerospace and World War II.
In addition to this landmark exhibition, the museum has a full slate of engaging virtual and socially distant in-person events scheduled throughout the summer. All upcoming events can be found at www.brandywine.org/events. More details on the exhibition can be found at www.brandywine.org/crawford.
Upon reopening, capacity limits and other safety measures will remain in place, including timed ticketing, and will be adjusted as needed. Summer hours of operation will be Wednesday-Monday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (closed Tuesdays). A complete list of safety protocols and visitation information is available at www.brandywine.org/reopening.
Elena Bingham, 74, died suddenly on May 24, following emergency surgery.
Elena Bingham
Elena came to the United States in 1960 at the age of 14 along with her brother Ricky, two among the many children fleeing the Castro regime in Cuba as part of Operation Peter Pan. She spoke no English when she arrived, but she would go on to earn her Bachelor of Science and a master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 1973. One of only two women in her program, she was an early entrant into what had been a largely male-dominated discipline. While in Texas, she married Richard Bingham. Together they moved to Wilmington to join the Dupont Co. as research scientists. While they later divorced, they remained supportive and caring friends right through her final days.
Elena moved through many assignments with DuPont before retiring in 2005. Following her retirement from the business world, she took on the role of president of Ursuline Academy, retiring for the second time in 2008. Elena was also on several boards of trustees, including St. Bonaventure University, St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, and the Franciscan Ministries Foundation.
Elena was a woman of many talents. Beyond her professional career, she loved to spend time painting, sculpting, and creating colorful quilts for family and friends. She also enjoyed expanding her linguistic skills. In addition to her native Spanish and English, she was fluent in Italian and most recently had begun studying German. She made many trips to Italy, living in Rome for months at a time, and greatly enjoyed her weekly meetings with her local ‘Italian Group.’
Elena is survived by her beloved son, Miles Bingham, his partner, Christopher Church, and her brother, Richard Plasencia, along with his wife, Maria Elena, and their three children, Richard, Lisa, and Alex.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at noon on Sunday, June 13, at the Carriage House at Rockwood Park, 4671 Washington Street Extension, Wilmington, DE. A light lunch will be served following the ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Elena’s name to the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia (osfphila.org), or to the St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York (stfrancisnyc.org) to support their ongoing charitable programs.
