Longwood responds to 97 calls during recent storms

LONGWOOD _ The series of severe winter storms has kept the volunteers of Longwood Fire Company busy for more than a month.

“Our fire company has responded to the emergency needs of the community during the recent times of severe weather,” said Chief A. J. McCarthy. “We’ve had 526 man hours of dedicated station staffing since the January 21 storm. They are all volunteers and they were all ready to answer calls at a moment’s notice.”

McCarthy said 249.5 of those hours occurred between February 5 and February 7 during one of the major storms.

Longwood Fire Company responded to 97 fire and rescue incidents since January 21 and 54 of those calls were between February 5 and February 8. “In the February ice storm,” McCarthy said, “five were structure fires, three were gas leaks and 9 were carbon monoxide calls out of the 54 requests.”

Longwood Fire Company has served the communities of Kennett, East Marlborough, Pennsbury and Pocopson townships since 1921. Longwood Fire Company provides fire and rescue and emergency medical services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For more information see www.longwoodfireco.com.
