Crackdown on aggressive driving

PennDOT announced today that 62municipal police departments from Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties, as well as the Philadelphia Police Department, will conduct aggressive driving enforcement activities as part of a statewide mobilization that runs from today through April 29.

The enforcement is part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by part of PennDOT’s investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Our number one goal is to keep our roads safe,” said PennDOT District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain. “This type of aggressive driving enforcement coupled with community outreach and education will reduce dangerous driving behaviors that put motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians at risk.”

Since the project was launched in 2006, nearly 600 roadways have been targeted with additional enforcement and education.

Municipal police departments will be targeting motorists exhibiting aggressive-driving behaviors such as running red lights, speeding and tailgating.

If you encounter an aggressive driver, PennDOT offers these tips:
• Get out of their way and don’t challenge them;
• Stay relaxed, avoid eye contact and ignore rude gestures; and
• Don’t block the passing lane if you are driving slower than most of the traffic.

Police departments in Chester County taking part include Kennett Township, Southern Chester County Regional PD (New Garden and West Grove townships), West Chester, Westtown Township and East Goshen Township.

In Delaware County, the departments include Aston Township, Haverford Township, Marple Township, Newtown Township, Radnor Township, Ridley Township and Springfield Township.
