Twin Bridges to close April 1

It’s finally going to happen, according to PennDOT. Twin Bridges, the old span over the Brandywine Creek on S. Creek Road between Chadds Ford and Pennsbury Township will be closed for replacement in two weeks and stay closed until autumn of 2025.

In addition to the bridge, the project includes replacing the approach roadway, the guide rails, and signing/pavement marking upgrades.

The anticipated start date for the closure is April 1. Replacing the bridge has been a topic of conversation since 2008 and work was originally scheduled to begin in 2019, yet studies about replacing the bridge date back to 2008.

During the closure, motorists are directed to use U.S. 1, Route 52, Center Meeting Road, and Delaware State Route 100 (Montchanin Road). Bicyclists traveling Bike Route L will be directed to use Bullock Road, Ring Road, Ridge Road, and Delaware State roadway Smiths Bridge Road.

The current bridge was built in 1927 after engineers started looking at changing the original structure in 1925. The name Twin Bridges stems from the original design that consisted of two bridges aligned end to end across the creek.
