• Newlin Grist Mill will hold its annual Archaeology Festival on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can assist professional archaeologists with excavation and cleaning the artifacts we find. The festival will also feature displays of local archaeology projects and Native American cooking by the Time Chef, Henry Ward. Younger visitors will especially enjoy our “Kids Dig” and pottery assembly activities. A food vendor will be onsite during the day, as well. Admission and parking are free for this event. • Healthy Kids Running Series is an organization that provides kids a positive, educational, and fun experience in the world of running. The fall series in Concord Township will run every Sunday from Sept. 16 to Oct. 14 (Sep. 16, 23, 30, Oct. 7, 14). The series takes place at Smithbridge Park, 687 Smithbridge Road. • The Brandywine Battlefield Park Associates Revolutionary Dining Series feat is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18. At The Gables on Route 1 in Pennsbury Township. Historian Thomas J. McGuire will be discussing the Archibald Robertson Map of the Battle of Brandywine which was discovered in the King’s Map Collection at Windsor Castle in 2000. McGuire is a teacher at Malvern Prep School and is the author of several books relating to the American Revolution and the 1777 Philadelphia Campaign. • State Rep. Eric Roe, R-158, will be holding a paper shredding event in Kennett Square to give residents of the community a chance to safeguard themselves against identity theft by having their personal documents securely destroyed. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Bancroft Elementary School, 181 Bancroft Road, Kennett Square. A Wiggins truck will be available to shred papers on site. Residents may also donate any gently-used clothing, shoes, toys, small appliances and kitchenware to Green Drop which will also have a truck available that morning. • The 33rd annual Mushroom Festival is Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9 in Kennett Square. The event includes everything from food, to art, to music, to contests — everything mushroom — and a whole lot more. There’s also a community parade with dining and dancing in the streets and an old-fashioned carnival. Admission is $3 for everyone 12 and up. • PAWS for People will hold training sessions for potential pet therapy teams in Kennett Square during September. There is a Sept. 13 orientation and a Sept. 27 training session from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Both sessions are required and will be held at The Friends Home, 147 W. State Street in Kennett Square. Anyone with a gentle, people-friendly pet who is interested in volunteering time to work with children and adults with varying needs should attend. PAWS for People provides therapeutic visits to individuals who will benefit from interaction with a well-trained loving pet. Therapy teams consist of one volunteer and one pet who have both completed rigorous training and testing. Pre-registration is required.
