What do you get when you combine two creative brothers, their writer grandfather, and a tuxedo cat with an oversized personality?

In this case, you get a published book, a growing series, media attention from around the world, and a cat who remains thoroughly convinced that he deserves every bit of it.

A little more than one year ago, Alex and Gavin Podgorski, along with their grandfather, veteran writer John Riddle of Bear, introduced readers to an unforgettable feline character in Life Advice From Mr. Dill Pickles. The humorous book, written from the perspective of a confident and opinionated tuxedo cat, offered readers a collection of life lessons inspired by Mr. Dill Pickles’ daily adventures and observations.

What began as a fun family project soon took on a life of its own.

mr dill pickles 2“We never imagined it would grow the way it has,” said Riddle. “The original goal was simply to create something fun together as a family. We wanted to make people laugh. Everything that happened afterward was a wonderful surprise.”

The idea emerged during countless conversations about the family’s real-life cat, whose unique personality often provided plenty of entertainment.

Like many cats, Mr. Dill Pickles enjoys naps, treats, and finding the most inconvenient places possible to sit. Unlike many cats, however, he also inspired an entire collection of humorous observations about life.

In the book, Mr. Dill Pickles shares advice on everything from confidence and happiness to relaxation and personal priorities. His philosophy is simple: nap often, don’t worry about what others think, and never apologize for being yourself.

Readers responded.

Since its release, Life Advice From Mr. Dill Pickles has been featured in newspaper stories, blogs, podcasts, and online publications. The project even attracted attention from a cat-focused publication based in Belgium, giving the creative feline an unexpected international audience.

“It was pretty cool when people from different places started reaching out,” said Gavin. “We thought it would mostly be friends and family reading it.”

Alex said seeing the book become a reality was one of the most exciting parts of the project.

“A lot of kids talk about writing a book someday,” he said. “We actually got to do it.”

The success of the first book inspired the trio to continue writing.

Their second title, A Cat’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays, follows Mr. Dill Pickles as he navigates Christmas trees, holiday meals, decorations, visitors, and other seasonal challenges that cats everywhere know all too well.

The family is also working on a third installment featuring more of the cat’s unique perspective on life.

While the books are filled with humor, Riddle believes the project has offered lessons that extend far beyond writing.

“One of the biggest rewards has been watching Alex and Gavin experience the entire creative process,” he said. “They helped develop ideas, review content, discuss marketing, participate in interviews, and see firsthand how a book goes from an idea to something readers can actually hold in their hands.”

For the boys, the experience provided an early introduction to publishing, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

It also created memories that the family will always share.

Mr dill pickles 3“Not many kids get to write books with their grandfather,” Gavin said. “That’s been my favorite part.”

Alex agrees.

“It was fun spending time together and coming up with ideas,” he said. “And Mr. Dill Pickles is funny, so that helped.”

As for the cat himself, family members say fame has done little to change him.

He still spends much of his day napping, supervising household activities from elevated locations, and expecting prompt meal service from his human staff.

If anything, they say, the attention has only reinforced his belief that he is the most important member of the family.

When asked what advice Mr. Dill Pickles might offer on reaching a one-year publishing milestone, the answer seemed obvious.

“I always knew I was destined for greatness,” he might say. “The humans are just catching up.”

One year after his literary debut, Mr. Dill Pickles continues to attract readers who appreciate his humor, confidence, and unconventional wisdom.

Not bad for a cat who spends most of his day sleeping.

And if his young co-authors have anything to say about it, Mr. Dill Pickles’ adventures are far from over.
