New coffee shop brewing in CF

Steve Sonsini knows the importance of first impressions. And he knows the first impression he wants people to experience when they enter his soon-to-open Chadds Ford Coffee House: “Come in and smell the coffee,” he said.

The Chadds Ford Coffee House isn’t open yet, but Sonsini and his wife Jackie are hoping to open in early April. They’re still renovating the interior of the old First Keystone Bank/Bryn Mawr Trust in the little shopping center with the U.S. Post Office on Route 1 in the Village of Chadds Ford.

It’s an interesting step for the couple since they each have work backgrounds as physical therapists. Jackie Sonsini is still in the field and won’t leave until the coffee shop opens. As for Steve Sonsini, he spent 28 years as a physical therapist and didn’t even like coffee until he turned 30 years old. Now, their livelihood will center on the little bean that so many people love.

Plans call for Chadds Ford Coffee House to be open seven days per week, from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays. There’s seating for 34.

In addition to a variety of coffees and teas, they will also have baked goods, some made in-house, and others brought in. They’re in negotiation with Oso Sweet Bakery in the Barn Shoppes to provide scones.

It’s too soon for the Sonsinis to go into what their specialty might be — they’re just getting the various coffee machines in and they still have furniture to put together — but they are planning to have seasonal specials and will make their own syrups for lattes and cappuccinos. There will also be nitro coffees and teas, nitrogen-infused cold brews that are frothy and effervescent with a frothy head.

They live in New Jersey but nothing there had “the right vibe,” Steve Sonsini said. Chadds Ford and the old bank location do have the right vibe.

“There was no place there that had the right ambiance or character. They were all cookie-cutter type stuff,” he said. “When we saw this spot [the old bank] I peeked in and said, ‘This is it.’”

Jackie Sonsini added, “We’re not just about the coffee. We’re about the experience, and we want people to feel good when they come in and walk out feeling good.”

She continued saying, “We want people to know that the coffee is excellent and that the atmosphere is just as awesome.”

There’s more to the story, but the Sonsinis will tell more once the shop is open and people can walk in and “smell the coffee.”

CFES art show March 16

(File photo)

Chadds Ford Elementary School is hosting its 75th annual Art Show and Sale, and with such a momentous occasion come key changes designed to enhance patron, artist, and volunteer experiences. Such changes include a shift to a one-day event on Saturday, March 16, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and the opportunity for patrons to purchase art, jewelry, wooden items, glass designs, and pottery directly from the artists, creating a speedier check-out process. This will also be a unique opportunity to meet the artists and discuss their work.

There is no admission fee for this event, and all ages are welcome to attend. To commemorate our 75th year, the event is shifting from its tradition of a single featured artist to a ‘Diamond Showcase,’ an on-stage display honoring featured artists from the past 30 years and the rich history of the event itself. There will be a mid-day presentation recognizing the work of our Diamond Showcase artists as well as the history behind the show.

Patrons should note that each artist will control their payment process. While some artists may offer various payment options, such as credit card, Venmo, or Apple Pay, all artists will accept cash or personal checks. The Chadds Ford PTO suggests bringing a checkbook to not miss an opportunity to purchase a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

We will also feature a raffle table of all donated pieces of art by our artists.

About the show

The late Betsy Wyeth, wife of the late Andrew Wyeth, founded the Annual Chadds Ford Art Show and Sale in 1949 and remained involved while their sons Jamie and Nicholas Wyeth were students at Chadds Ford Elementary. The annual event continues to serve as the school’s largest annual fundraiser. Funding continues to support enhancements to substantial enrichment opportunities, including a state-of-the-art greenhouse, which will be enjoyed by many generations of Chadds Ford students to come.

Police Log Feb. 28: Indecent assault, fire vehicle crash

Pennsylvania State Police

Avondale Barracks

State police are investigating a report of an indecent assault on a 16-year-old girl from Chadds Ford. The incident reportedly happened on Unionville Road in East Marlborough Township on Feb. 12.

State police from the Avondale barracks are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a fire truck and two cars at Landhope Farms on Saturday, Feb. 24 just before 11 a.m. The fire truck from Po-Mar-Lin Fire Co. was traveling south on Unionville Road approaching E. Street Road, responding to a multi-car crash. Its lights and sirens were on. The second vehicle, unit 2, also southbound on Unionville, was in front of the fire vehicle and making a left-hand turn into the Landhope Farms parking lot when the Po-Mar-Lin vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and struck unit 2 on the driver’s side. Both vehicles traveled T-boned into the parking lot where unit 2 struck a light post, a utility pole, and a third unoccupied vehicle that was at a gas pump. Police reported no injuries.

Police said they charged a 61-year-old man with DUI following a one0car crash on Lenape Road in Pocopson Township on Feb. 20. The report said Shawn Jasper, of West Chester, was driving north on Lenape Road, but was driving too fast for conditions. The Saturn SW he was driving went off the road and ran into a tree.

Police are also investigating a report of fraud in which a 37-year-old woman from Pennsbury Township was the victim. The report said someone used her American Airlines miles. The estimated value is reported as $1,770.

A 27-year-old man from Baltimore was arrested for stealing $112 worth of merchandise from the East Marlborough Walmart on Feb. 24.

Police also arrested two juvenile females in connection with their attempt to steal $246 worth of merchandise from the Walmart in East Marlborough Township. That incident was on Feb. 24.

Kennett Square Police Department

Borough police said they arrested Jose Mendez-Lopez on suspicion of DUI following a Feb. 17 accident at the intersection of S. Union and W. South streets. The accident happened at 7:12 p.m. According to the report, police observed two vehicles with heavy damage, one crashed into the traffic light bollard. The responding officers were immediately met by the driver of “unit 2”, who advised the operator of “unit 1” —Mendez-Lopez — had fled the scene on foot westbound on W. South Street and he believed him to be intoxicated. Police later observed Mendez-Lopez stumbling down the sidewalk with blood on his face and clothing. Police said he wasn’t injured but observed indicators suggesting intoxication and field sobriety tests showed impairment. He was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and refused a chemical test of his breath. Mendez-Lopez was processed and later released at his residence.

Driving 23 mph over the speed limit led to the arrest of Anthony Bird on Feb. 11, a police report said. According to that report, Bird is restricted to only driving vehicles equipped with interlock systems, but the interlock was not present in the car. Bird was taken into custody, transported to Pennsylvania State Police Avondale for processing, and later released pending issuance of a summons. Charges include speeding and illegally driving a vehicle without an interlock system.
