UCF OKs travel, facility upgrades

Patton Middle School students will get a chance to visit Rome and Pompeii in June of 2025. (Image from EF Educational Tours.)

As anticipated from last week’s work session, Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board directors approved a middle school trip to Europe and some facility upgrades. The approvals came during the Feb. 20 regular school board meeting.

The proposed European trip will have students visiting Rome and Pompeii in June of 2025. The requested dates are June 17-24, but there is a flexible travel window of June 14-27. There will be a 6-1 student to chaperone ratio. The cost is $4,519 per student and $5,159 per adult.

The trip is run by EF Educational Tours which has run tours for the high school. Director Elise Anderson said EF has designed the tour specifically for middle schoolers and that the idea has “the potential to establish an international travel program similar to one that has operated so successfully at the high school.”

Directors also unanimously approved several proposed facilities upgrades and the purchase of two new 9-passenger vans. All seats will be equipped with 3-point belts. As previously reported, the district will buy the vans from Rohrer Enterprise for $64,489 each, for a total of $128,978.

Director Rashi Akki said the older vans might be put up for sale or one might be kept as a backup.

School board members also approved several upgrades for Pocopson Elementary School. PES will be getting a new dishwashing machine for $58,007, and replacement playground equipment for $73,676. Both of those upgrades are funded by the district’s Long Range Facilities Plan.
