Judith A. Schmidt of Kennett Square

Judith A. Schmidt, 64, of Kennett Square, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford. She was the spouse of Thomas Schmidt, with whom she shared 41 years of marriage. Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late William Hufford and Florence (Stehle) Hufford.

In addition to her husband, Judith is survived by her son, Andrew (Lacey) Schmidt of Phoenixville; her daughter, Kristin (Nick) Piccari of Philadelphia,; and her brothers, William (Carol) Hufford Jr. and Donald (Karen) Hufford.

Judy loved working at Longwood Gardens and enjoyed the many friendships she made there with colleagues. She loved animals, especially her beloved horse (Buffett) and her dogs (Buddy and Abby). She enjoyed playing Scrabble by her pool or on any beach. She loved gardening, skiing, and traveling. Tennis and paddle tennis at Kennett Square Golf & Country Club were also among her favorite activities. Above all else, Judy loved the time spent with her friends and family.

You are invited to visit with Judith’s family and friends on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, 401 N. Union Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348. Her memorial service will follow at 11. A reception will follow at Kennett Square Golf & Country Club, 100 E. Locust Lane, Kennett Square, PA 19348. Interment will be held privately. William “Bill” E. Howell Jr of Kennett Square

William “Bill” E. Howell, Jr., 80, of Kennett Square, died Saturday, Jan. 13, at Twin Pines Nursing Home in West Grove. He was the husband of Mary Lou (nee Snyder) Howell. Together, they shared 53 years of marriage.

Born in Madison, Wisc., Bill was the son of the late William E. Howell and the late Jane Thatcher Howell. Bill graduated from Salesianum High School in Wilmington. He continued his education and graduated from Villanova University in 1965. Bill then went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree from Widener University Delaware Law School.

Early in his career, Bill worked for Wilmington Trust Company as a municipal bond trader. After law school, he and a partner started a law office. Bill eventually opened his own law practice in Kennett Square. After 40 years of service to the community, he retired in 2019.

He served as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Pius X Council # 3858. He was also a longtime member of St. Patrick Church in Kennett Square and the Men of Malvern. In his youth, Bill earned his Eagle Scout recognition in Boy Scouts. When his boys were young, he participated as their Cub Scout leader.

In addition to his wife, Mary Lou, he is survived by three sons, William “Tripp” E. Howell III of West Grove, Kevin D. Howell (Jennifer) of Paoli, and John Scott Howell of Claymont; two daughters, Deborah Jane Howell (William Nadir) of Warsaw, Poland and Catherine Ann Foley (Mark) of West Chester; one sister, Barbara Coates of Red Lion, Del.; three brothers, Richard F. Howell (Mary Ann) of Newark, Stephen C. Howell of Wilmington, and Kenneth T. Howell (Jeanne) of Fenwick Island. Bill was an endless source of fun, love, and joy to his 11 grandchildren, Allison, Kieran, Tyler, Ariel, Eva, Phoebe, JJ, Alexis, Valerie, Hazel, and Guster.

Interment will be held privately. Police Log Jan. 24: Crashes, DUI

Police said Dawn M. Ryburn, 53, of Chadds Ford, was charged with following too closely after a two-car crash at Kirk Road and Huntsman Drive in Concord Township on Dec. 21. The accident happened at 4:25 p.m. According to the report, Ryburn struck another car from behind. That other car was stopped at Kirk before turning left onto Huntsman. Both vehicles had to be towed but no injuries were reported.

Robert Dickens, 47, of Wilmington, was arrested for shoplifting at Wegmans on Dec. 11, according to a police report. He is accused of stealing $205 worth of merchandise from the store.

Avondale Barracks

Debra L. Thomson, 65, of West Grove, was arrested for DUI following a two-car crash in Pocopson Township, according to state police. The accident happened on Jan. 9 shortly before 7 p.m. on Lenape Road. Police said Thomson was driving north on Route 52 but crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic while trying to negotiate a slight right curve. The other car was southbound and the driver saw the other vehicle in his lane and stopped. Both vehicles suffered minor damage but there were no injuries reported.

Police said David C. Tunstall, 47, of Marshallton, was charged with following too closely for his involvement with a two-vehicle accident on Jan. 9. The rear-ender crash happened at 2:53 p.m. on Street Road at its intersection with Lenape Road. According to the report, Tunstall was driving east and attempted to merge from E. Street Road onto Lenape Road but struck the other vehicle that was stopped. No injuries were reported but the second vehicle had to be towed.

Javier Ortiz-Parra, 21, of West Grove, was charged with driving at an unsafe speed after he ran off the road in East Marlborough Township on Jan. 16, a police report said. The accident happened at 6:360 a.m. on Line Road west of Bancroft Road. According to the report, Ortiz-Parra was traveling north on Bancroft when he tried to stop at a stop sign before turning left but was unable to stop because of ice on the road, and slid off the road hitting a fence.
