The cookie crumbles in Chadds Ford

Proprietor Devin Acton and his crew prepare fresh dough for a new batch of cookies at the new Crumbl Cookies shop in Brandywine Mills on Route 202 in Chadds Ford Township.

Crumbl Cookies, a new gourmet cookie shop is now open in Chadds Ford. The grand opening was Friday, Feb. 17. Devin Acton, the franchisee, said the fledgling company has caught on and grown fast.

“This is an exciting new thing that’s kind of blown up. We have about 700 locations across the United States, which is surprising considering we only opened our first one about five years ago,” he said.

“We have a really exciting menu that rotates every single week. [But] we always have our chocolate chip cookie, a milk chocolate chip cookie. We serve that warm,” he said.

Every Sunday evening, the new menu comes out on the company’s app or website, and the crew starts making those cookies Monday morning, Acton said. In addition to the website, there is also the app available here.

This week’s menu included M&M cookies, chocolate-covered strawberry cookies, confetti, chocolate caramel, and New York cheesecake. But, he added, once a month they do a mystery cookie, which gives each store a chance to add a flavor of its choosing.

“So, once a month we’ll have a week where we have seven cookies.”

The kitchen area bustled Friday morning, the day of the grand opening. Customer traffic was steady, and the staff was busy, constantly prepping and baking fresh batches. Acton said they don’t keep cookies around all day, only for a few hours, then new cookies are made.

Crumbl Cookies’ niche is that it is a gourmet cookie business, Acton said, and he emphasized that they continually make new cookies every few hours using fresh dough.

“You’re getting a hot, fresh cookie whenever you’d like,” he said.

Shop hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. until midnight. The shop is closed on Sunday.

The Chadds Ford shop is next to Starbucks in Brandywine Mills on Route 202, the Wegmans development. Crumbl Cookies chose Chadds Ford for the first in the area because, he said, “We just love the Chadds Ford area. Crumbl’s is family-oriented, all about family. Our motto is ‘Bringing family and friends together over the world’s greatest box of cookies.’ So, we always look for areas where there are families.”

Acton added that they plan to open two more stores in Delaware, one in Wilmington and another in the Christiana area.

And for those who are curious about the name, Acton confirmed that the Crumbl Cookies is a takeoff on the phrase, “That’s the way the cookie crumbles.”
