Rt. 1 Bridgework underway

The rehabilitation of the Route 1 Bridge over the Brandywine between Pennsbury and Chadds Ford townships is underway. and traffic lanes are expected to reopen in a few weeks before more work is done.

Work to rehabilitate the Route 1 Bridge over the Brandywine Creek between Pennsbury and Chadds Ford townships is underway. While PennDOT’s website still says the work will continue until further notice, PennDOT’s Brad Rudolph said the lanes might reopen within a couple of weeks but close again in September for more work.

The inside lanes of the bridge were closed following a May 27 inspection. Rudolph said the inspection was a six-month interim inspection because the concrete in the support pedestals was deteriorating. There are temporary supports in place, but other joints need work along the median because leaking water is causing more concrete to deteriorate.

“In order to rebuild the pedestals, the beams require jacking and raising…After the beams are jacked. The contractor will then install rigging on the face of the abutment and rebuild the pedestals. After the pedestal work is complete, they will reseal the joints and reopen the left lane,” he said.

Rudolph added that the concrete should be poured this week. The bridge will then be unpacked in a couple of weeks, and lanes reopened, but then they’ll close again sometime after Labor Day for another few months to replace an expansion dam on the south end of the bridge. That dam allows the bridge to expand and contract as needed.

Adopt-a-Pet June 28

The following animals are ready to be adopted from the Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester.

Brody

Brody

Brody is a very sweet and loving boy who likes car rides, toys, water, running, and playing tug. Brody doesn’t let his size stop him from climbing in your lap to snuggle and you will earn his eternal devotion if you also give him a rub behind his ears and on his belly. This teacher’s pet knows “sit” and “lay down” and would love to learn more. As you can see in the photos, Brody is also lots of fun and enjoys running on the shelter’s lure course. He has interacted well in the past with small animals and cats and has done well with older children. Brody looks forward to meeting you and your family, and any other dogs in the household prior to adoption. You can adopt Brody for a fee you name through Saturday, July 3.

Hershy

Hershy

Are you looking for a daily dose of adorable? Hershy may be the “purrfect” guy for you. This handsome, midnight black sweetheart has no problem introducing himself and will likely fall right into place in his forever home. He is social, playful, affectionate, and loaded with confidence.
