Helen Sipala releases book on Wyeth

Artist Andrew Wyeth’s model and confidante Helen Sipala has released a book written from diaries she kept of conversations with the famous American artist. The book, Beyond the MARRIAGE Bed: My Years as Friend, Model and Confidante of Andrew Wyeth, was published this month by Regent Press of Berkeley, Calif.

Beyond the MARRIAGE Bed is an intimate look at Andrew Wyeth the artist and the man and his close relationship with Helen Sipala, model and confidante. The book gives a rare glimpse into the world of a true and talented artist through Helen’s 20-year diary. Wyeth didn’t want his life “sugar-coated” and Helen didn’t do so.

Helen Sipala’s memoirs as a long-time friend of Andrew Wyeth.

An Amazon review stated, “The book dives into the good, the bad, and the ugly. It reveals a heartfelt personal account of friendship, wealth, love, folly, infatuation, heartache, hardship, and tearful moments among the buttercups. An eye-opener and page-turner!”

A book signing will take place on May 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Barbara Moore Fine Art, Chadds Ford Village and Barn Shops, 1609 Baltimore Pike, Suite 400 A, Chadds Ford. The cost of the 200-page book is $29.95 The book can be obtained from Barbara Moore Fine Art, the Regent Press, http://www.regentpress.net/, or other social media book sites.

In March 1989, Helen and George Sipala met Wyeth after they purchased the Chadds Ford home known as Painter’s Folly. Renowned artist Howard Pyle used the home to teach art students, including Wyeth’s father, N. C. Wyeth. During the years, Andrew Wyeth visited Helen and George regularly, sharing meals. The trio became close friends. A sought-after Christmas invitation was Wyeth holiday parties hosted by Helen and George Sipala.

During their years of friendship, Andrew shared many private thoughts with Helen. Helen also observed Wyeth, an American master painter, as he created many of his masterpieces. Andrew invited the couple to major national and local art events. The couple’s home, especially the Widow’s Walk, was treated as a studio by Wyeth.

“Over the years, he stated several times that he hoped I ‘was writing all this down.’ You will see by my notes when this happened I never responded to him. It was a known fact Andy preferred that writers not make his stories ‘sweet’ but to ‘put an edge to it,’” as Helen wrote in her Introduction.

The dedication to Wyeth captures the sense of the book, “Yes Andy, I did write it down just as you “hoped” I would. I think you would be proud that the world now knows the REAL Andy:  sensitive, generous, compassionate, comical, humble, and a true gentleman!”

Helen worked with Chester County author Bruce E. Mowday on the manuscript and editing of the diary

Council appoints health board members

Delaware County Council appointed five members to the Delaware County Board of Health last week. The appointments were made as part of a strategic plan to create a County Health Department, slated to open in January 2022. Creating a board of health is a prerequisite by the Pennsylvania Department of Health in order to be recognized as a county health department.

The five members were selected from 85 applicants who submitted letters of interest and resumes. The Board of Health is responsible for formulating rules and regulations for the prevention of disease, the prevention and removal of conditions that constitute a menace to health, and for the promotion and preservation of public health. Rules and regulations formulated by the Board of Health must be approved by County Council.

The newly appointed Delaware County Board of Health members are:

  • Patrick J. Brennan, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Penn Medicine
  • Rosemarie O’Malley Halt RPh. MPH, Delaware County COVID-19 Task Force Director
  • Lilly Higgins MD MBA MS, Market Chief Medical Officer at Keystone First and AmeriHealth Caritas PA
  • Oni Richards, Executive Director of African Family Health Organization
  • Lora Siegmann Werner, Regional Director/Environmental Health Scientist at the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry

Resumes of the five Delaware County Board of Health members can be found here.

“We have made enormous progress since we officially began the process of establishing a county health department a little over a year ago and this is one more step towards our end goal,” said Delaware County Council Vice-Chair Dr. Monica Taylor. “The five Board of Health members selected demonstrate both the experience and knowledge necessary to assist and guide the health department’s efforts and an immense passion towards ensuring our residents are receiving the highest level of public health services. Together, our goal is to build healthy and thriving communities.”

Work to officially create a Delaware County Health Department began in January 2020. Despite the hurdles faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, Council has worked to identify and complete the steps necessary to establish a County Health Department including commissioning an Economic Impact/Feasibility Study, completing a strategic plan, holding listening sessions with coalitions and organizations, and meeting with the Pennsylvania Department of Health weekly. The County plans to hire a Director for the new Delaware County Health Department and begin hiring personnel for the department this summer. By January 2022, the County anticipates that the new Delaware County Health Department will be operational.

The timeline for the creation of the County Health Department can be found here.

The vision of the Delaware County Health Department is to ensure that all members of the Delaware County community have access to the resources that provide the opportunity to lead a healthy and productive life. The Delaware County Health Department will strive to promote, protect, and assure conditions for optimal health for all residents of Delaware County through leadership, prevention, response, and partnership with the community.

More information about the future Delaware County Health Department can be found here.
