Christmas in Miniature opens

Christmas in Miniature at Barbara Moore Fine Art Gallery runs through the end of the year.

It’s been going on for 39 years, and even COVID-19 isn’t stopping it. The “it” is Christmas in Miniature at Barbara Moore Fine Art Gallery in the Barn Shops in Chadds Ford. The event began in 1982 when Moore was the director of the former Chadds Ford Gallery.

Moore said in an interview a few years ago that the idea was to give people an inexpensive way to buy high-quality art from professional artists. Moore has maintained the tradition in the four years she’s owned her own gallery.

Things are a little different this year because of the pandemic. While customers are more than welcome to shop in person, the selection is also available for online browsing and buying. And there won’t be any light refreshments at the gallery this time.

“All I can offer is an elbow bump and a cup of coffee on the way out, and a smile behind my mask,” Moore said. “It’s still a neat event, and the artwork is always good.”

Christmas in Miniature runs through Dec. 31. For more information, call 484-776-5174.

DelCo’s Festival of Lights opens Dec. 4

Rose Tree Park will once again welcome visitors with glimmering lights at night during December.

Delaware County’s annual Festival of Lights began more than four decades ago as part of the nation’s Bicentennial celebration and became a popular local tradition for residents of all ages. Over time, the outdoor displays have grown from 50 decorated trees — one for each municipality and one large one to represent the county— to more than 75 lighted trees and dozens of festive figures, including toy soldiers, a gingerbread family, and Santa’s reindeer.

“We’re thrilled to host this wonderful event every year in Rose Tree Park,” said Marc Manfre, the director of DelCo’s Parks and Recreation. “It’s a community favorite and tradition for residents of all ages.”

But, as with many things this year, there have been some modifications due to COVID. They include:

  • Six-foot distancing among guests must be maintained;
  • Masks must be worn;
  • Directional arrows will direct foot traffic to flow in only one direction on the sidewalks in the display area;
  • The park will stay open for an extra hour each night to provide more flexibility for those who wish to avoid the peak visitation times (weekends around 7 p.m.).

“This is a fun and safe way for residents to get into the holiday spirit and enjoy some outdoor and socially distanced festivities,” said Delaware County Councilwoman Elaine Paul Schaefer. “Grab your mask, hat, and gloves, and come out to enjoy the beautiful display.”

The Festival of Lights runs nightly from 5-10 p.m., Dec. 4 through Jan.3. Admission and parking are free. Handicapped parking is available. For park information please call 610-891-4455 or visit www.delcopa.gov

It’s Critter Sale weekend at BRM

(Courtesy image)

Celebrating its 35th year, the Brandywine River Museum of Art’s annual Holiday Critter Sale returns Friday, Dec. 4 through Sunday, Dec. 6. Critters are delightful, distinctive ornaments and tabletop decorations that are handmade locally using natural materials. Critters come in all shapes and sizes from whimsical animals — like cats, dogs, reindeer, and bears — to heavenly angels and stars. Using their imaginations, the Critter-maker volunteers work with natural materials such as pinecones, acorns, eggshells, flowers, and seed pods to give each Critter its own unique personality and expression.

New safety practices, including capacity limits, face mask requirements, and social distancing, will be in place when attending the sale in the Museum’s River Room this year. Credit and debit card payment is preferred to limit person-to-person contact.

Critters go on sale Friday.

New for this year: For those who prefer to shop online — for the first time ever — the Brandywine is now offering a small selection of some of its most popular Critters for sale online. To browse and shop for Critters online, visit: www.brandywine.org/critters

Critter prices range from $5 to $35, with specialty items from $50 to $250. Brandywine volunteers have been creating Critters for more than 40 years, with all proceeds benefitting the Volunteers’ Art Purchase Fund and Art Education & Programming.

Sale hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional Critters will be available for sale in the museum’s River Room beginning Dec. 7, through Jan.10, while supplies last.
