Child predator arrested while attempting to flee

Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun M. Copeland announced that Santhosh Akinepalli, 27, of Exton, was arrested for a second time following his initial arrest during a large scale undercover sting operation that netted 10 child predators in April of 2019. Santhosh Akinepalli was apprehended a second time after purchasing a one-way ticket to India from the United States and was charged with flight to avoid trial or punishment.

Santhosh Akinepalli, arrested while attempting to flee, authorities say.

On May 5, the Department of Homeland Security contacted Sergeant Ken Bellis of the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office Criminal Investigation Division Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force regarding Akinepalli attempting to flee the country.

Akinepalli, of the 300 block of Apple Drive in Exton, had been previously arrested following an investigation by the Ridley Township Police Department and member of the Delaware County ICAC Task Force. On April 6, Officer Tim Kearney posed as a 13-year-old female on a social media application and received a message from Akinepalli, who asked, “How much for an hour?” while asking the juvenile to engage in sex. Akinepalli arranged to meet the juvenile after acknowledging several times that he knew the juvenile was 13 years old.

On April 12, after engaging in sexually related conversation, Akinepalli arranged to meet the juvenile and was taken into custody while traveling to the meet location. Akinepalli was charged with attempt to commit statutory sexual assault and related offenses. Magisterial District Judge Jack D. Lippart set bail at $50,000. The preliminary hearing is set for May 13. On April 15, Akinepalli posted 10 percent of the $50,000 and was released, with bail conditions requiring him to obtain permission from the Delaware County Bail Office prior to traveling outside the state of Pennsylvania. Akinepalli made no such request.

CID placed an alert with the Department of Homeland Security for Akinepalli should he attempt to travel outside of the United States. On May 5, Homeland Security contacted CID and advised that Akinepalli had purchased a one-way airline ticket from San Francisco International Airport to Hyderabad, India. Homeland Security Investigators confirmed that Akinepalli checked in for the flight to India and was traveling alone. Akinepalli is a citizen of India and had been visiting the United States on a work visa. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, with assistance from the Department of Homeland Security, took Akinepalli into custody at the San Francisco International Airport prior to departure of his flight.

“Homeland Security Investigations prioritizes cases involving the abuse of our children,” said Marlon V. Miller, special agent in charge of HSI Philadelphia. “Applying our unique law enforcement authorities, HSI Philadelphia in coordination with HSI San Francisco, were able to prevent Mr. Akinepalli from absconding. I’m very proud of all of those involved in bringing this dangerous man to justice.”

“This defendant, who was initially apprehended for actively seeking out vulnerable children for his own sexual gratification, attempted to leave the United States to avoid facing the consequences of his predatory behavior. I would like to commend the Department of Homeland Security, United States Customs and Border Protection Agents, and our ICAC Task Force members for their continued work to ensure perpetrators like Santhosh Akinepalli face the consequences of their actions.”

Music festival at CFHS May 18 and 19

Music festival coming to the Chadds Ford Historical Society.
There will be a petting zoo at the festival.

As part of its mission to bring family-friendly events to its spring event schedule, the Chadds Ford Historical Society introduces a brand-new music festival this year – Valley Jamboree.

This two-day event is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be held rain or shine, on the society’s open fields behind the Barn Visitors Center with free parking adjacent to the festival grounds.

Don’t miss out on joining us for this relaxed, community music fest right in the heart of Chadds Ford and the Brandywine Valley. There will be food, kids’ activities, shopping vendors, and even well-behaved dogs are welcome to attend too (as long as they are kept on a leash at all times).

While you enjoy a day and evening of nearly continuous music, younger members of the audience are free to explore a range of kid-centric activities. They include a giant 60-foot bounce house, a petting zoo, a make-your-own crafts tent, as well as lawn games and scavenger hunts.

The entire family can also enjoy perusing the shopping area with local crafters, artisans and specialty gift merchants. Of course, the event is not complete without a diverse offering of food, wine, and beer, all served by several different vendors. You may also want to explore the exhibits at the Barn Visitor Center. The historic c. 1725 John Chads House and the c. 1720 Springhouse will be open during certain hours as well.

Schedule of bands

Saturday’s music lineup includes bands known for their improvisation and enthusiastic stage presence. They include the playful funk-jazz-and rock band, Green Eggs and Jam, and the award-winning Indie rock trio, WaveRadio, described by critics as “Doors-y” with their “wandering psychedelia” style, and the music of Special Delivery, known for their high-energy mix of soul, funk, and rock.

Sunday’s lineup is equally diverse and includes Sin Brothers, classic rockers who play everything from Billy Joel to Led Zeppelin, Steve Liberace, an acoustic rock artist, and AfroBear, a four-piece band that describes itself as “soul-ternative rock” that creates original music blending reggae, hip hop, and blues.

Valley Jamboree is held on the grounds of Chadds Ford Historical Society, 1736 N. Creek Road, Chadds Ford.

Bring a blanket and camp chairs and plan to spend the day celebrating spring with good music and food.

Tickets are available for $15 for adults, $5 for young people 7  to 17 years old and children 6 years under are admitted free. CFHS members are free with membership card. Visit our website at www.chaddsfordhistory.org to purchase tickets and for additional information.
