‘Love is in the Air’ with the Kennett Symphony

The Kennett Symphony of Chester County under the direction of Music Director, Michael Hall, presents Symphony Under The Stars – Love is in the Air.  The concert will be held at Longwood Garden’s Open Air Theatre on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 7:30 pm.  In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside at Unionville High School Auditorium.

Relax with friends and family, and enjoy an evening under the stars.  Enjoy a potpourri of light classics and pops, including selections from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s enchanted The King and I, John Williams’ Love Theme from Star Wars Episode II, and Tchaikovsky’s musical depiction of young love and impending tragedy in Romeo and Julie Fantasy-Overture. Performances by the winners of the Symphony’s Instrumental and Vocal competitions give you the opportunity to say, “I heard them when.”

  • Vocal Competition Winner: Korean Soprano Joowon Chae studies at the Mannes School of Music under the tutelage of Ruth Falcon. She completed her M.M. in Opera at Temple University in Philadelphia, U.S.A. and her B.M. in vocal performance at Seoul National University in Seoul.
  • Instrumental Competition Winner: Flutist, Audrey Emata, 16, just returned from Europe, where she enjoyed summer studies with Julien Beaudiment and Sir James Galway. During the school year, she attends Juilliard Pre-College, where her teachers have been Brad Garner and Demarre McGill, and beginning this fall, Carol Wincenc.

Single ticket prices are $40 in advance, $45 on the day of the concert, students are $10.

Ticket price includes the concert, access to visit Longwood Gardens during the day on the day of the concert, the post-concert illuminated fountain performance in the new Main Fountain Garden, and free parking.

Celebrating its 76th season, the Kennett Symphony of Chester County is Chester County’s only fully professional symphony orchestra.  Based in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, the Symphony serves residents of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey.  In addition to presenting varied and entertaining orchestral concerts, the Kennett Symphony encourages young musicians through annual Instrumental and Voice Competitions and its affiliation with the Kennett Symphony Children’s Chorus.

DEP OK’s culvert permit

Details aren’t yet known, but there is movement on getting Heyburn Road reopened. Chadds Ford Township Manager Amanda Serock announced at the Aug. 2 Board of Supervisors’ meeting that the state Department of Environmental Protection finally approved the emergency permit to repair a culvert.

The township applied for the permit last September, but Serock said last week that DEP didn’t approve the request because the department felt there was no emergency. The culvert failed last week, and a portion of northbound Heyburn near Route 1 collapsed, forcing the road closed.

There’s no timetable on when the work will begin, but the township is negotiating with several contractors. Engineer Mike Schneider said work would start on fabricating a new culvert after the contractor is selected. The fabrication could take up to a month, he said.

Serock said official detour signs would be posted with a timeframe once those details are known. It could be another two months before Heyburn Road reopens.

Other business

• In response to a question about traffic studies done in connection with the Shops at Ridge Road development in Concord Township, Chadds Ford solicitor Mike Maddren said there would be no follow up studies at this time because Chadds Ford was named as a defendant in the suit brought by Pettinaro Construction, the developer of the property.

Maddren explained that any traffic studies done by Chadds Ford now would be discoverable, meaning the results could be used as evidence against the township.

• Supervisors passed an amended zoning ordinance regarding cellular and wireless facilities. As part of the amendment, the township will allow — by conditional use — facilities to be built on Routes 1 and 202 and along Ridge and Smithbridge roads.

• The board appointed township resident Jennifer Panero to the Rachel Kohl Library Board.

Adopt-a-Pet Aug. 3

Adopt-a-Pet Aug. 3

The following animals are ready to be adopted from the Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester.

Catrina

Catrina

Catrina has quite a story! She is a 1-year-old who was evacuated after the New Castle Fire tragedy in early July. She’s one of our longest residents, and a staff favorite. She is a beautiful, shy cat who needs love and attention after all of the changes she’s endured. Catrina would do well in a quiet home with an experienced cat owner and older children. But don’t let her shy temperament fool you, she has a lot of love to give! Catrina’s adoption fee is “pay what you want” through Sunday, Aug. 6.

Creamsicle

Creamsicle

Creamsicle will surely be a family’s sweet summer treat. This adorable five-year old has had some bumpy times, yet he remains sweet and loving despite his hardships. He arrived at our New Castle Campus as a rail-thin stray with a story he couldn’t tell, then that facility was struck by fire the following day. He moved to the West Chester Campus, where he’s recovered and is starting to gain weight. Creamsicle would make a great family dog and companion. He’d be open to meeting other dogs in a home, and he should do well in a family with kids five and up. Who will welcome this cool dog on a hot summer day? Creamsicle’s adoption fee is “pay what you want” through Sunday, Aug. 6.
