The Chester County District Attorney’s Office and the Pennsylvania State Police announced the arrest of Sheri Lee Maufort, who lives in West Chester, on charges that include institutional sexual assault, corruption of minors, and related offenses. The illegal conduct occurred off campus and outside of regular school hours, said a press release from Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan.

“I have said it before and I will say it again. Rule No. 1 for school staff is: ‘Do not have sexual contact with a student,’” said Hogan in the release. “If you break this rule, you will be fired, sent to jail, and never work in a school again.”

Maufort, who is married, worked since 2015 for a company that provides substitute teachers, aides, and administrative support staff to various schools, including the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District. During the time of the alleged crimes, she was working at Unionville High School as a substitute teacher’s aide, the release said.

“The Unionville-Chadds Ford School District will not stand for this type of behavior,” Unionville-Chadds Ford Superintendent John Sanville said in the release. “We immediately reported this incident to law enforcement and are grateful for the rapid response. We now will begin the difficult task of addressing this incident with our students, parents, and teachers.”

According to the criminal complaint, Maufort met both students when she worked as a substitute teacher’s aide in a classroom at Unionville High School on a few occasions.

She contacted the first victim, who was under the age of 18, by text in August and asked him to come outside his home to meet her. The victim got into her car and she took him out of his neighborhood, supplied him with alcohol, and then parked at a restaurant in Birmingham Township. They walked out into a field where inappropriate contact, including oral sex, occurred, the complaint said.

Approximately three weeks later, Maufort encountered the second victim at a party in the area after a high school football game. Maufort drove the second victim from the party, parked her vehicle, and initiated sexual contact with the teen before returning him to the party, the complaint said.

Hogan said the alleged incidents were reported to law enforcement on Nov. 11, prompting investigators to interview both boys. Maufort was arrested on Wednesday, Nov. 16, the release said.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 28. Maufort, who is represented by attorney Lloyd E. Long III, was remanded to Chester County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $100,000 bail, court records said.

This case was investigated by the Avondale barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police with assistance from the Chester County Detectives. Assistant District Attorney Emily Provencher is the assigned prosecutor. Anyone with further information should contact Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Jason Pennington at 610-268-2022, the release said.

“Any sexual contact between an adult and a minor is a serious matter,” State Police Lt. Richard D’Ambrosio said in the release. “The involvement of a teacher’s aide, someone who is entrusted with the well-being of a student and who is in a position of authority, cannot and will not be tolerated.”

Mint headquarters gets topped off

The Henderson Group and Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union held a topping off ceremony for the mint’s new headquarters now under construction in the Chadds Ford Business Campus.

Crews put the beam in place.

A crane hoisted the last steel beam for the roofline into place on Nov. 16 for the building that could be ready for occupancy in June or July.

The building, Henderson 6, is located at the intersection of Dickinson and Hillman drives, across from Evergreen Place. That particular lot was approved for a three-story office building 13 years ago.

Henderson President Brian Coyle said the idea to develop that particular lot dates back almost 50 years when Wilbur Henderson bought the acreage that is now the business campus. He said the topping off ceremony represented a chance to look back as well as forward into the future.

FMFCU President and CEO John Unangst said the new office “brings in a new era and a new image. We’re moving into a progressive area where we will meet an expanding market and give our employees a showcase headquarters.”

The mint will have the top two floors, and two offices on the ground floor. According to Henderson Vice President Mark Eisenhardt, there are already businesses looking to move into other ground floor office space.

Franklin Mint announced in July that it was moving into Chadds Ford after 20 years being headquartered in Broomall.

Former Chadds Ford Supervisor Debora Love signs her name to the beam used to top off the building. Love was one of the supervisors who approved an office building on that lot.

Unangst said at that time, “The Henderson Property Group was aggressive in pursuing FMFCU as a tenant. I especially appreciated their receptiveness to our desire for a two-story, glass-enclosed café with grand staircase. The opening of two floors will produce tremendous work flow, communication, and camaraderie among employees.”

FMFCU now has $1 billion in assets and 82,000 members. There are 179 employees in the Broomall office, but anticipates adding another 60 within five years.

The credit union is also looking to expand into the state of Delaware.

Super Science Saturday attracting 100 girls

West Chester University’s annual Super Science Saturday will welcome 100 girls in grades six through 12 who share a passion for science.

West Chester University's Super Science Saturday will expose girls to the excitement of scientific careers.
West Chester University’s Super Science Saturday will expose girls to the excitement of scientific careers.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, the girls will conduct hands-on experiments and projects. New this year, organizer Karen Schwarz, an astronomer and associate professor in WCU’s Earth and Space Sciences Department, is bringing two women engineers into the mix, in part through her connection with the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center in West Chester, a university press release said.

Schwarz has separated the high school girls from those in middle school so that presenting scientists are able to create more age-appropriate programming.

“Studies have shown that girls start to lose interest in science as they enter middle school,” Schwarz said in the release. “Our goal is to educate girls about the various careers that are available in the STEM fields [science, technology, engineering, math] and show them that science can be fun.”

She will be joined by a number of the university’s other women faculty scientists in biology, chemistry, computer science, geology and astronomy, math, and physics.

Participants will hear from professional women in science about specific careers, successes, and how they overcame hurdles. They will also learn from WCU women science students not that much older than themselves about the interesting and challenging aspects of studying and preparing for careers in science. Schwarz hopes to shatter some stereotypes, such as scientists being stuck in labs all their lives or geologists always getting dirty while digging up rocks, the release said.

Interactive sessions include activities that are designed to spark curiosity about math and science content including creating virtual worlds on the computer, looking at the motions of flocks and swarms, and solving pet mysteries in veterinary science.

Super Science Saturday will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. Activities take place in Merion Science Center, 720 S. Church Street. For additional information, click here.

Images found on the computer of Walter T. Irwin, 42, of Upper Chichester, included images of a female child in Lion King pajamas between 8 and 10 years old engaging in a sex act with an adult male, said a press release from the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office.

On June 7, detectives from the Delaware County Internet Crimes Task Force ICAC and the FBI executed a search warrant at Irwin’s home on suspicion of child pornography. Irwin, who was home at the time with his wife, told detectives he wanted to speak with them upstairs. He then admitted to possessing child pornography on his computer but told detectives that he had removed the file-sharing program, the release said.

Following a forensic examination, 39 images and 11 videos found on Irwin’s devices were confirmed as child pornography. He has been charged with possession and dissemination of child pornography and the sexual abuse of children as well as the criminal use of a communications facility, the release said.

Irwin, who is being represented by defense attorney Scott L. Kramer, was released on $150,000 unsecured bail set by Magisterial District Judge Diane M. Holefelder, who placed him on electronic home monitoring with GPS. He was ordered to surrender his passport, have no Internet access, no contact with minors and to complete a psychological and sexual evaluation. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 23, court records said.
