LONGWOOD _ Longwood Fire Company has kicked off its annual fundraising appeal to help meet the expenses of running a 24-hours-a-day operation. Municipal contributions not enough to cover expenses
“We need the public’s financial support,” said Chief A. J. McCarthy. “Day and night, 24 hours a day, we are on duty. Last year we answered 512 calls from the public. Those calls for help include, but are not limited to, fire, water rescue, accidents and EMS assisting.”
Longwood has received the support of the community in the past and the fire company appreciates those who have made Longwood Fire Company an exceptional emergency services organization, according to McCarty.
McCarthy pointed out that funding from municipalities and other grants don’t cover all of the costs of running the fire company. He said, “Longwood Fire Company heavily relies on donations from the community to meet our budget. Training our volunteers, maintaining our emergency vehicles and all of the other costs of running a fire company is very expensive. We’re asking the public to donate what they can. We understand these are tough financial times. Each dollar we receive is valued and will be put to good use.”
Longwood Fire Company is dedicated to providing the best possible emergency services for the community.
“We’re inviting everyone to come to our Open House on Sunday, October 20 and see first-hand our operation,” McCarthy said. “This is a great chance for the whole family to tour our facility and meet our staff. There will be demonstrations and activities for the whole family.”
Longwood Fire Company has served the communities of Kennett, East Marlborough, Pennsbury and Pocopson townships since 1921. Longwood Fire Company provides fire and rescue and emergency medical services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For more information see www.longwoodfireco.com.
Full casting has been announced for the 2013/2014 National Tour of THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a new musical based on the bizarre and beloved family of characters created by legendary cartoonist Charles Addams, which will make its Wilmington, Delawarepremiere October 29-November 3, 2013 at the DuPont Theatre for eight (8) performances only.
THE ADDAMS FAMILY features an original story and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
Jesse Sharp and KeLeen Snowgren will star as Gomez and Morticia in a cast that also includes Shaun Rice as Uncle Fester, Amanda Bruton as Grandma, Jennifer Fogarty as Wednesday, Connor Barth as Pugsley, Dan Olson as Lurch, Mark Poppleton as Mal Beineke, Blair Anderson as Alice Beineke and Bryan Welnicki as Lucas Beineke. Portraying the ancestors are James Michael Avance, Chloe O. Davis, Jake Delaney, Lexie Dorsett, Aaron Fried, Elizabeth Hake, Julia Lancione, Katie Mebane, Galloway Stevens and Julio Catano Yee.
In a prolific career spanning six decades, Charles Addams created several thousand cartoons, sketches and drawings, many of which were published in The New Yorker. But it was his creation of characters that came to be known as The Addams Family that brought Addams his greatest acclaim. With a unique style that combined the twisted, macabre and just plain weird with charm, wit and enchantment, Addams’ drawings have entertained millions worldwide and served as the inspiration for multiple television series and motion pictures.
THE ADDAMS FAMILY, which began performances in March 2010 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and ran through December 2011, immediately became one of Broadway’s biggest hits. Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune described the production as “classic, full-tilt, fast paced, old-fashioned musical comedy!” and John Simon of Bloomberg News called it “uproarious! A glitzy-gloomy musical entirely worthy of the macabre drawings by Charles Addams.”
Performances are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings starting at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday evening performances start at 8 p.m. and Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2 pm. The Brandywine Battlefield Park Associates want to thank you so much for your award of $1300.00 through the Blue Rocks Baseball Game event in the form of a check, in the amount of $1100.00 #900073 dated September 12, 2013, and a $200 check sent directly to the park from one of your members as a ticket payment. Although the weather did not cooperate for a game that particular night, George and I had a splendid time sitting in the car with our younger granddaughter waiting for the rain to stop. So, even what may appear to be a discouraging outcome has its most bright side; as they say, priceless.
It is friends and supporters like you who enable us to promote the significant history of this area as well as provide educational opportunities to the community and visitors alike. We have visitors from many different areas of the country who are able to learn about Colonial life and this important battle.
The Associates look forward to continuing our relationship in the future. I personally know it is a lot of work for you, and I truly appreciate it.
Thank you again.

Michael Neil Burkhart, of West Grove, died at home on Saturday, Oct. 5, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous six-year battle with cancer. He was 57 years old. He was the beloved husband of Susan Ferron Burkhart with whom he shared 32 years of his life, and 26 years of marriage.
Born in Wilmington to Jay M. Burkhart Sr. (deceased) and Helen Ann Gehr Burkhart, he was a 1974 graduate of Kennett High School. Michael attended Penn State University and has worked for Chadds Ford Tree Service for the last 15 years, a company that he considered family.
He has been a member of New London Presbyterian Church, and the Christian Life Center for almost 20 years. His faith was paramount in his life and so was his love for his family. He was most proud of his two sons Eddie and Harry. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and vacationing with his family and friends. He was well known in Chester County for his firewood.
He is survived by his mother Helen, his wife Susan, and their two boys, Edward Michael and Harry Raymond and his brother Jay Burkhart (Cindy) of Shreveport, La., five nieces and nephews, and a wonderful extended family and friends.
Michael was involved in every aspect of his family’s life. From Indian Guides to Boy Scouts to Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Little League, AGRA basketball, soccer, and Lacrosse. He also was always known at Susan’s wingman with all of her PTA, PTO and sports booster’s duties.
Michael was a great husband, father, son, brother, provider and friend. His attitude during his battle with cancer was so uplifting. He was a very strong man.
The love and support he and his family received during this difficult time cannot be explained in words. His friends, family, church, coworkers, doctors and nurses, so many people went above and beyond to love and support him. He was truly a Blessed man.
His family would also like to thank the whole staff at Chester County Oncology and Hematology in the Kennett office and CC Neighborhood Hospice.
