Reopening of Kennett meeting room soon

The Kennett supervisors could begin meeting again in the township building by March.

The supervisors have held meetings at neighboring municipal buildings for months while work is being done to remediate a mold problem in the public meeting room. On Wednesday they met in the new Kennett Borough building; in previous months they met at the New Garden Township building. They have not held hybrid meetings since Aug. 17.

“We’re not at our usual place…due to circumstances with mold,” Supervisors’ Chairman Richard Leff said at the start of Wednesday’s meeting. “We hope to be back there sometime early/middle of next year.”

Township Public Works Director Theodore Otteni told the supervisors that the remediation and repairs are expected to be finished by March and that someone was at the building Wednesday to start on the drywall.

“We’re shooting for mid-March for us to be back there,” he said.

In his report, he said the township got a quote from a vendor “to perform all rehabilitation work and renovations, which was determined to be too costly. Subsequently, quotes have been solicited … to rehabilitate the basement … in an effort to achieve the most cost-effective rehabilitation.”

The repairs, which include waterproofing to prevent high groundwater from causing future mold issues, are part of the township’s capital budget.
