Deja vu forecast: Cold, wind, snow, repeat

The polar plunge continues as Sunday, Feb. 15, is expected to be the coldest night this season and could break records, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The lows on Monday morning, Feb. 16, will likely dip below zero north and west of Interstate 95. A wind chill advisory continues for Chester and Delaware Counties until 11 a.m. on Monday with wind chills of 10 to 20 below zero. Northwest winds may gust up to 40 mph overnight, subsiding to 25 mph Monday morning.

A winter storm watch has been issued for the region from 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, to 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The latest forecast places the axis of heaviest snowfall south and east of Philadelphia over the Delmarva and southern New Jersey coast, which could receive up to eight inches of snow.

Chester and Delaware Counties are currently in the four- to six-inch range for expected accumulation. However, some uncertainty exists. Similar to what happened in the Jan. 26-27 blizzard, there will be a tight snowfall gradient to the west and northwest of the storm so any minor shift in the track will either increase (if the low tracks closer to the coast) or decrease (if the low tracks farther offshore) snowfall amounts by several inches across the area.

The National Weather Service recommends that morning commuters on Tuesday, Feb. 17, allow extra time. For more information, visit the NWS website at http://www.weather.gov/phi/.
