Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board directors voted to spend almost $1 million on facility upgrades during their May 20 meeting.
The board approved upgrades to the main office HVAC at Chadds Ford Elementary School. The total cost for the upgrade is $165,429. That breaks down to $44,233 to Seiberlich Trane Energy Services and $121,196 for Oliver Heating and Cooling. Included in the project is the installation of a new variable refrigerant flow system for heating and cooling to address the issues in the existing main office spaces
According to Director Rashi Akki, the cost is below the $200,000 budgeted for the upgrade.
The board also approved spending $176,487 on four paving projects at Chadds Ford Elementary, Hillendale Elementary, Patton Middle School and the walking path at the bus garage and varsity softball walking path. Unitex Asphalt Services will be doing the work. Akki said the projects are part of the Long-Range Facility Plan.
In another project, the Unionville High School and CF Patton Middle School campus will get new sidewalks with ADA curb cuts at $31,030. Akki said the project will provide a safer walking space between the two schools.
Another project will cost the district $574,00 for floor slab replacement at UHS. The work will entail replacing the high school cafeteria and cafeteria LGI floor slab because of ongoing moisture and vapor issues. We continue to experience moisture and vapor issues from below the slab that is damaging the floor finishing materials, requiring constant maintenance and replacement. These issues stem from the lack of vapor barrier materials under the existing concrete slab, as well as this slab being cut and patched in numerous areas, with the removal of old walls, and installation of new foundations during renovations. Akki said this had been an issue even before the 2011-12 renovations.
This project involves removing the entire concrete floor slab, install the appropriate vapor barrier, and provide a new finish to the surface of the new slab. The work was awarded to SB Conrad, Inc.
